Unconventional Tactics, Tuesday, Period 2

"Yo, Rookies!" Reno had barely even bothered to wait for the students to take a seat before leaping into his lecture, today. No, he kind of wanted to leap right on in, get this out of the way, and then pretend that he was sleeping at his desk for a while.

He was grinning, but Reno was in one of his moods, apparently.

"What is it that people always tell you about the best laid plans? They go all to shit, or somethin' like that?" No, Reno. That wasn't quite how the saying went. "Well, I'm here to tell you, you can plan ahead all you want, yo. You can take these classes, you can go home and start up a friggin' arsenal big enough to take down a whole freakin' country, but you don't never know what's gonna come barging through the door, bigger'n you and able to take whatever it is you wanna dish out."

He smirked faintly.

"Fandom's even more special for that. It sees you gettin' ready for one thing, it'll do whatever it can to make shit interesting, throw a wrench in the works. Hell, graduations around here are evidence of that, yo. One year, somethin' even blew up the school. Another, even worse, everyone had themselves an eyeful of Madrox's bare ass. In multiple."

And Reno's, singular, but Reno didn't actually see anything the matter with that, so why bring it up?

"Point I'm tryin' to make here is, Fandom Island is a multidimensional hub. And it's got a mind of its own. It knows when you're gettin' comfortable, and it's got every universe and timeline out there to pull from in order to amuse itself at your expense. And that thing you spent three months plannin' ahead for? That'll be the first thing to go, yo. Don't be too surprised when it does."

He smirked, though it was still a little tense as he heaved himself up to sit on the top of his desk.

"Assignment for today is simple, zoto. Pick somethin' you been plannin' for, or somethin' you want to plan for sometime soon. It can be a school event, how you're gonna deal with the next big invasion, a date, whatever. And then come up with ways that Fandom can screw it up for you, yo. If you see it comin', where's the fun in it tryin', right?"

Nevermind that this exercise was something like giving the island ideas. But hey, Reno never said that his assignments were foolproof, either. Heck, maybe he was just taking out his mood on the students by dooming them to Fandom's weirdness. Who knew?

Ino was a bad, bad Rookie for raising an eyebrow at Reno's mood today. He was normally pretty blunt but talking about how they were all screwed so--

It was weird.

And she kept fighting the urge to snicker.

This was not the kind of lecture Kate wanted to be hearing after everything that had been going on lately.

So they should all just excuse her as she spent the entire lecture doodling flowers and kittens in her notebook, willing herself not to listen to a damn word.

The reminder of just how doomed they were was not taken lightly, but hey, he was saying the truth anyway...right?

That didn't stop her from frown at the thought of having her plans messed up with.

Rescue missions getting way bigger than anticipated, unexpected complications... yep. Sounded familiar, and Kennedy had a wry look on her face that wasn't quite a smile as she listened to the lecture.

Raven was in a good mood that morning, so even talk of What Could Go Wrong couldn't wipe the smile from her face.

Tara frowned at the lecture. She'd been in Fandom for almost a year and a half, and she still kept finding out about disasters she'd missed.

Of course today's lecture was about plans going terribly awry. It just made her think about the disaster that occurred this past weekend. She couldn't even blame Fandom for that.

Since Ben's entire life seemed to based around the premise of "wait for good things to happen and get smacked with poodoo instead," he wasn't all that surprised by the lecture.

It didn't mean he'd learned to plan much--just to roll with the inevitable punches.

Ino looked contemplative as she tried to decide what the island would mess up for her.

Hmmmmm.

"I am sometimes precognitive," Raven said thoughtfully, "but I cannot always predict the future. And to try to guess what the island might do to disrupt something you are planning will only serve to cause undue anxiety. Certain precautions are wise, but I do not think there is any way we can guess the whims of the island. It will always think of something we have not."

And that would be as ridiculous as refusing to heal someone to save her strength in case someone else became injured, Max.

"That's the trouble with Black Widow dreams, too," Karla said. "They're not always that easy to explain and define. I mean, I had two different precognitive dreams in my last trip home and neither prepared me for what I found. It's more that they let me know something was wrong and to be on my guard, but left the details out. Which is probably for the best, I guess."

There was only one long term plan in Zee's head, and she had talked about it enough for the island to know all about it. But it didn't even have to do with the island. Unless of course it had a way to make her search of a way to counter whatever curse she had on more difficult. That would be pretty damn annoying.

"The only thing I can think about...well, I want to improve my magic. Worst thing Fandom can do is take it away...I honestly don't think I could do much about it."

This was one of those lectures that amused Chloe because she was familiar with the phrase "The best laid plans of mice and men..."

There was a certain degree of glowering going on from Jake today. After what Rosalind had told him, he was trying to figure out exactly where it fitted in.

Actually talking about it, that was a different matter since Rosalind had told him she never had. That made it not his place now, right?
