Cafeteria | Afternoon | Thursday | November 25

It was Thanksgiving Day. It was time for parades, football and food. Currently, Alex was leaning against one of the walls in the kitchen, watching the catering company set up for dinner. There was a shitload of food and his stomach growled just watching.

It was good to be president. He got to delegate everything.

When one of the caterers stepped forward and thrust a plastic wrapped garment bag in his hand, Alex frowned.

"What?"

"Outfits for the dinner," the caterer said. "The contract states that we make and you serve the food. No fulfillment of the contract, no food."

Confused, Alex unzipped the bag and peeked inside. The costume was not cool at all.

"Are you serious?" Alex asked, glaring. "No way!"

"No costumes," the caterer said, already signaling his workers to get ready to package the food up, "no food."

Alex continued glaring at the caterer and the costume. He hated his life.

[OCD is up and this is posted early for SP, of course!]

"I don't eat animals," Elphaba explained. "I suppose it comes from having talked with Animals back in Oz."

Or knowing how badly animals were treated in this world.

"...What? You talk to animals?" Well, she couldn't blame Elphaba for no wanting to eat who could have been and excellent conversation partner.

She was going to end up leaving meat, really.

"Anyone can, in Oz," Elphaba said. "There's animals and then there's Animals. Those who have the will to speak and do so just as you or I. There are still farms, of course, but many Munchkinland dairy farms are run with willing Cows, for example."

She lit up a bit, eager to discuss something she was passionate about.

"That. Is. Awesome!" You didn't find out there's a place where Animals can speak without being considered it odd, after all. "Willing? You mean, like cows that accept their fate? Isn't that a bit weird?" It was pretty damn weird, but Zatanna was trying to take it easy. The shine on her eyes, though, was betraying her.

Elphaba stared. "Dairy farms," she said. "They willingly give their milk, not their lives."

That would be creepy.

"Yeah, sure." They were eating, or at least she was eating turkey. Meat, chicken, fish, it was the same for Zatanna. Add cows to the equation and the first thing that came to her mind was more meat, obviously. "Creepy."

"Voluntary milk doesn't sound that much of a normal thing for me neither. Do they get paid or something? Or just well fed?"

"I never visited one of the farms," Elphaba admitted. "But Animals are paid for their work like anyone else. I believe there's an owl that's a vicar somewhere in Munchkinland, for instance."

"That's kind of impressive. So they buy and own things?" The image of a cow owning a farm herself was both awe-inspiring and highly amusing to Zatanna. "It's odd to find a place with non-human races being treated as equals that I know."

Oh, how little Elphaba knew.

And how incredibly not equal they were truly treated, back in Oz.

"Yes, I know," Elphaba said. "Hence, vegetarian." She shrugged. "But I suppose it's different for different people."

As in many cases, ignorance was bliss? At least for the two of them.

"Well, you could convince people if you tell them that. If it wasn't today I would say I will try. And maybe I will, once I manage to set that in my mind."

"I don't mean to make people change themselves," Elphaba said. "But if you do want to try to change, I would help. I haven't missed much, from stopping eating meat. There are plenty of great fruits and vegetables in this world. I keep discovering new ones."

She gave Elphaba a warm smile. "I'll let you know then. I will need someone to keep and eye on me."

"And who better than the person you share a room with?" Elphaba said. "Happy Thanksgiving, Zatanna."

"Can't imagine anyone better suited for it", replied Zee as she nodded. "Happy Thanksgiving, Elphaba."
