Cafeteria | Afternoon | Thursday | November 25

It was Thanksgiving Day. It was time for parades, football and food. Currently, Alex was leaning against one of the walls in the kitchen, watching the catering company set up for dinner. There was a shitload of food and his stomach growled just watching.

It was good to be president. He got to delegate everything.

When one of the caterers stepped forward and thrust a plastic wrapped garment bag in his hand, Alex frowned.

"What?"

"Outfits for the dinner," the caterer said. "The contract states that we make and you serve the food. No fulfillment of the contract, no food."

Confused, Alex unzipped the bag and peeked inside. The costume was not cool at all.

"Are you serious?" Alex asked, glaring. "No way!"

"No costumes," the caterer said, already signaling his workers to get ready to package the food up, "no food."

Alex continued glaring at the caterer and the costume. He hated his life.

[OCD is up and this is posted early for SP, of course!]

Sookie was not only back to nearly full strength, but in high spirits as she eagerly took a plate of food. Sure, she piled it high enough that she sort of felt like she was channeling Bobby or Karla, but she frankly felt she'd earned it.

Besides, this was the point of Thanksgiving -- to eat yourself into a food-induced stupor, and fall asleep in front of football. And this time, she hadn't had to cook at all, which was sort of the best part.

"Did you take any green beans?" Tara asked, around a mouthful of same. "I would eat vegetables all the time if they were always like this."

"I did!" Sookie said, pointing at her plate with her fork. "Thanksgiving always makes me wonder why I don't eat just tons and tons of cranberries. Then I remember they aren't always cooked with sugar into a jelly, but still."

"I like them in muffins," Tara said. "So ... basically baked with sugar in cake. Does anybody just eat them without sugar?"

"Probably the same people who like grapefruit without sugar," Sookie said wisely.

"Evil, wrong people with broken tastebuds," Tara decided, with a firm nod. "It's, uh, Good to see you around. I didn't get the chance to say that at the meeting yesterday."

"Thanks," Sookie said with a small smile. "Sorry I keep getting your girlfriend in trouble in my world. Though, did she tell you how awesome she was? She saved me from this scary werewolf chick. Shoved her out my bedroom window. It was really cool. Or would've been, if I was watching a movie or something and wasn't scared."

Tara shook her head as she swallowed another bite of green beans. "Don't worry about it," she said. "I mean, I would like it if she was always here and, uh, all snuggly in bubble wrap, but that's not Kennedy. She'd go crazy if she wasn't helping people once in a while, y'know? And she always seems to come back in one piece."

She managed not to let herself add 'so far.'

"Well, if I have my 'druthers," Sookie mused, prodding at some stuffing, "2010, at least, will finish without any more incidents like that one, or the one in Karla's world. We can all just have a nice, quiet Christmas, without kidnappings or explosions. And then the restless kids -- Bobby's the same way, too -- can go off and do their thing and leave us fretting."

"If I had wine, I'd say I drank to that," Tara agreed. "There's been drama all fall, right? I just want some time to calm down. Maybe some snow. It's pretty."

"I'm sure that we'll get some," Sookie said, with a significant raise of her eyebrows. Because after all, even if it didn't actually snow soon, she was sure it could be arranged. They had connections, after all. "Besides, snow's kinda a novelty for you, isn't it? Californian and all, right?

"Yeah, I'm from up North but even there it mostly just rains," Tara explained. "... it's probably colder than Louisiana, though."

She raised her eyebrows right back at Sookie. "Oooh. Think we could get help with that?"

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Probably," Sookie said thoughtfully. "I'll see about asking. 'Cause yeah, I'm not really used to snow either. We'll get about a quarter inch overnight sometimes, and frost, but that's it. Some people here think I need more exposure to the stuff."

"You are looking well," Elphaba greeted. "Which is rather impressive, given the stories I've heard lately. Happy Thanksgiving, Sookie."

She at least said it with a friendly smile.

Sookie gave her a wan smile in return. "Rumor mill's working overtime, huh? I'm feeling better, thanks. Happy Thanksgiving."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I believe it's not rumor when I hear it first hand," Elphaba said. "Karla gave a rather detailed account." And while she wanted to add in a 'I do hope you've learned your lesson', she managed to actually keep that comment to herself. Which was for the best all around, really.

"It sounded rather scary. I'm glad that you are safely back on the island."

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Me, too," Sookie replied with a sigh. "For everyone's sake. I'm sort of hoping Karla and Raven don't descend on me and order me back to bed before I have pie. I've spent the last week in bed. One'd think that'd be enough, but they were both pretty upset over what happened to me."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"If there is anyone who should be eating pie, it's Karla," Elphaba said, a tiny bit droll. "If you ask me, they both are fussing over you because they're just upset with themselves."

Filters, Elphaba rarely had them.

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not their fault," Sookie said with a little shrug. "They don't have anything to be upset with themselves about. They didn't kidnap me. But I should check on Karla and make sure she's recovering, thanks for reminding me."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
"She's a good friend," Elphaba said, finally finding something in the semblance of small talk. "I was hoping to see her here, but it seems so many have gone elsewhere for the holiday."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
"She might be around here somewhere," Sookie hedged, not really wanting to consider that Karla had gone anywhere else, yet. That way lay trouble. "It's generally a family thing, here in America, so a lot of people here who...you know, have family and a place to go, probably wanted to be near to them. Me, I've just got the one brother, and he's elsewhere for the holiday."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Elphaba nodded. "And those of us from places completely different get to be a little confused by it all." She smiled, though. This was much easier than she'd feared. "I was just learning about Christmas the other day to suddenly have another holiday pop up."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, Lord, Christmas is probably confusing as heck to someone who didn't grow up with it," Sookie winced, giggling. "Y'all have any holidays like that at home?"

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, there is Lurlinemas," Elphaba said. "But I'm not sure how similar they are. Bruce seemed to think that Christmas had become... ruined over the years."

Re: Dinner [Thanksgiving 2010]

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-11-26 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Commercialized?" she asked. "It is mostly about the shopping and stuff, if you go by how most people view it. But it's only like that if you let it get to you."
