Library, Monday (11/15)

By some strange, twisted, and quite frankly a little bit mean coincidence, there was a book about the history of Stonehenge in the returns dropoff today, full-color panoramic photo of the standing stones in prominent display on the cover.

Gabrielle took one look at it and flinched, immediately deciding she should put it away as soon as possible . . . but she couldn't help looking at it, instead.

Half a chapter into the discussion of the possible history of the monument, she was frowning in a but that's not how it happened way, and rather than putting the book away, she'd gone to get more for cross-referencing purposes. It was sort of like picking a scab. A very perplexing one.

It did nothing for her mood, but that was something she wouldn't be taking out on anyone. And anyway, there was coffee; that might be the important thing.

With the National Exam so close, Momoko really needed to study. So, after her class was over, Momoko dragged her laptop, study guides, and schedule to the library and set up in the back of the reference area.

Dutifully (and a great deal woefully) ignoring the little pop-up window that tempted her asked if she wanted to check for wi-fi, Momoko booted up the first tutorial.

Jaime had the SATs coming up (for the second time), so he also needed to do some studying. And he needed some place quiet and low-traffic, and perhaps most importantly, a place where he wouldn't bump into Momoko by accident. He didn't want to push her if she wasn't ready to talk. He'd sort of made that mistake with Dinah, and didn't want to do it again.

So he made is way toward a nice out of the way corner and...

Momoko's nice little 'I'm bored' wall of dictionaries and atlases (they actually had some for her world! Who knew?) was not tall enough to prevent her from seeing who had wandered into the reference section.

"No." Momoko wanted to get over this and be back to normal, but she still felt upset with him and wasn't sure how to fix it.

Plus, he was carrying his books, which meant he was really going to study and probably actually use the books for something other than a distraction.

"No. Uhm. It's fine." She gathered her books, to get up.

"No, no," Jaime shook his head quickly. "You were here first. I can.. go... find a thing."

She sighed and lowered her laptop screen. "I'm not doing anything anyway. You know me and studying."

Momoko chuckled, folding her arms over her laptop and staring over her dictionary wall into the shelves. "Not many people can keep me from getting distracted. That's why I'm here."

"Is it working?" he asked, smiling before he remembered that things were still tense between them. But then he did remember, and the smile fell away.

She looked up at him a moment, then shifted back to looking at the shelves.

"Did you only tell me because the island made you?"

Jaime blinked. For a second he couldn't even parse that question. What was she talking ab--?

He looked down at his feet and shook his head. "No. I... you deserved to know." When he'd gotten the phone. When they'd teamed up officially.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier? Did you really think I couldn't handle it?"

"I didn't tell anyone," Jaime said softly as he obeyed, still finding it too hard to actually look at Momoko. "It wasn't about not trusting you, it was about not..."
