Jonothon, library. Library, Jonothon.

And there didn't seem to be terribly much work to do, either. Which suited Jono just fine. If people didn't take out books and make messes around here, that meant that he had plenty of time to take out books and to clean the resulting messes from that.

There might have been a small stack on the desk beside him of things that he was looking forward to reading. And by the end of the day, he was hoping to have at least made a good dent in it all. Reading, after all, was a wonderfully antisocial activity, which he could also conveniently use to forget about all of the million stupid little things that had been eating at him, lately.

Weren't books wonderful?

While antisocial mutant is being antisocial, this might get you what you want, faster.

He hates everything.

But this book is fairly good, so he'll probably hate the universe slightly less if you wait until he's done just one more paragraph. Just the one!

George was perfectly content to wait for the end of that paragraph. Hell, she could wait for the end of a chapter. She wasn't going anywhere.

Feel free to ignore her, Jono!

Yeah, right. As if that would happen. Jono could tell that George was waiting there even without looking up, after all. And so, end of the paragraph it was, and then he was tucking a bookmark in there and glancing up at George, eyebrows lifting slightly.

//And how's our little drummer gel today?//

"Fine," she said, shrugging as if she hadn't thought about it. "Hey, speaking of that whole ... drummer thing? You know, I didn't ... fuck up too badly, did I?"

There was a measure of pride to that. An actual sense of accomplishment. Someone should get a camera.

Jonothon couldn't help it. He actually attempted a smile at that.

//Not too badly, no,// he agreed. //Actually, I think you kept time rather well, luv.//

Which ought to help that sense of accomplishment along, yes.

George was beaming. Take a picture, this was not going to happen a lot.

"So that ... means I owe you less for the drum set, right?" she said. "That was the deal. I perform with your band, and we're good."

... Unless there were going to be future performances, and she was actually a band member. Not that she wanted to be. Seriously. Much. Honest.

//Right, you owe me less,// he agreed. It seemed fair to him, for a night of playing that none of them actually got paid for. //Now, I suppose I'll have to find some new bribe if I want to put on a show again in th'future.//

Not at all perking up at that, Jono. It must be a trick of the light.

"Is there another show planned?" she said. "I mean, you don't have a ... full-time drummer lined up yet, do you?"

Please say no. Please say no. Please say no.

//Well, I don't have anything on th'go at th'moment, but that doesn't mean I'm ruling out th'possibility, either. And I don't have another drummer either, for that matter.//

Oh, he totally knew what that perking up was, right there. He was going to withhold comment so that he wouldn't scare her off, though.

//You know, we put on a show on Friday? A real show? And we don't even have a name yet.//

Which was good. George scared easily.

"So, we need a name," she said. Easy how that 'we' slipped out. "What kind of name are we looking for?"

Without waiting for him to answer, she continued, "Can we be 'Der Waffle Haus'?"

The place grew on you.

//... Der... Waffle Haus?//

The waffle house?

Jono would pass judgment in a moment, but he needed to take this second to just kind of look completely baffled, please hold.

"It's where we got our assignments," she said. 'We' this time meaning her group of reapers, yes. "Besides, I like waffles."

Jono vaguely remembered liking waffles once, too.

//It's kind of reminiscent of some sort of German trance group,// he mused. But, it should be noted, he was looking thoughtful, rather than shooting it down all at once.

"Just a suggestion," she said. "We should see what the rest of the band wants to call ourselves. ... We don't actually have to play trance music, do we?"

Nothing against it, really, it just ... seemed repetitive. How would you know you were done with the song? They just sot of looped for a while.

//I think we could probably get on just fine without playing any trance,// Jono agreed. //But yes, asking the others their opinions can't hurt. Maybe put the names into a hat or something...//

Jono really had nothing. Seriously.

"Maybe we all sit around and shout names until we're too bored to care," George suggested. "And then we go for the hat."

//And just adopt th'first name we pull, no matter what?//

... Actually, Jono was kind of tempted to do that, now.

[... Omg and so am I. One big post for the group to brainvomit, the handy-dandy RNG...]

"Exactly," she said. "Especially if it's one no one likes."

//All th'better if it's one nobody likes,// Jono chuckled. //We can write songs about how absolutely idiotic our band's name is.//

"So we should suggest some deliberately bad names," George laughed. "Can we put umlauts where they don't belong? That way everyone will think we're metal, and get disappointed that we aren't."

They might as well disappoint their listeners, if they were going with a band name they hated. They could name their first LP, Why Did You Buy This? It Sucks.

And their second could totally be called, Fifteen Dollars You'll Never Get Back.

//Th'more, th'better, if that's th'standard we're aiming for,// Jono replied, chuckling and shaking his head a little. //And random words in other languages. Bonus points if we manage to get the same word more than once.//

"Maybe that can be our name," she suggested. "The word 'waffle' in a few different languages. And then we give interviews where we pretend there's a lot of bullshit symbolism to it."

Third CD: A Waste of BitTorrent.

//Mmm, yes. I think we could manage to wax poetic about waffles long enough for any interviewers to decide that we're mad geniuses, if only to shut us up,// Jonothon agreed.

Number four? Sounds Better Scratched.

Because I don't know what time of day he's going to get re-stuck in time!

Jono's current book-reading situation is very much like my own. This pile of books is mocking me. Mocking me, by sitting there and being all awesome-looking.
