It would be a very, very silly mistake to assume that, just because today was Halloween, Jonothon wouldn't be in the library.

Okay, granted, Jono actually liked Halloween, particularly on this side of the ocean, where being a little freakish and a little frightening was more or less encouraged. He could handle that. In fact, he did 'freakish and frightening' like a pro.

... That said, wearing the costume that he'd worn to Petey Sci-Fi last night was about as good as he was going to be able to do. He'd spent money on the damned thing, he might as well get some use out of it, even if he couldn't play his rock-and-roll horn while singing Hot Patootie.

Some of the effect was probably lost on the fact that he was way, way more scrawny than Meat Loaf.

"Twenty minutes seems like a really long time..."

//Twenty minutes is less time than most gels spend in th'bathroom in th'morning,// Jono pointed out. //How much time have you been putting into practising, anyhow?//

Oh, don't ask that, Jonothon. You'd just weep if you knew.

Ariel shifted a little, looking down at her fingers as they entwined with themselves.

She muttered something in response, something that sounded a bit like, "Enough?"

The question mark would be the most prominent part of the admission.

Jonothon's head was starting to hurt, here.

//You think so?//

Ariel sighed. "Okay, maybe not enough, but, Jono, there's so many other things I have to do, too! Like Glee Club, and the play, and classes, and cheerleading, and work, and there was homecoming and everything, too..."

//And I've got two jobs, I'm in two clubs, I go to classes as well,// and he'd had time to hare off to Kaeleer to be traumatized by a ransacked village and then a genocide. //Sometimes I stop by th'Magic Reserves on Tuesdays, and I still make time to practise.//

And this was because Jonothon was a huge fan of displacement activities.

"Yeah, but you already know how to play your guitar," Ariel pointed out.

//And you figure I did th'first time I picked it up? Like a bloody songbird opening its beak and serenading th'world? While that'd be nice, luv...//

Really, he'd played until his fingers bled. Something like that Brian Adams song.

"But you didn't have all that stuff you just mentioned going on when you first started, is what I mean."

//And so I worked at it, and I got better,// Jono pointed out. //It doesn't exactly cultivate itself.//

Ariel sighed a bit. Now he kind of was starting to sound like Sebastian. Thank goodness for accents.

"Okay, okay. Twenty minutes tomorrow, I promise."

//Thank you, luv,// Jono replied, trying to temper his nagging with an attempt at a smile.

His smiles generally lacked something in the way of a mouth, but hey, the effort had been made.

//I'll make it up t'you on Tuesday, if you do. A dance or something, perhaps.//

Because he wasn't a complete monster.

And he did know just the thing to say to really get her. She lit up like a glowworm.

"Really?"

//To any piece of music yer heart desires,// Jonothon agreed, shrugging his shoulders. //There's no shortage of variety at th'Groovy Tunes, after all.//

It was possible that Jonothon did not understand the forces which he happened to be tempting, here.

And those forces now left him with a pleased, bouncing mermaid.

"If that's the case," she said, beaming, "I might even practice for thirty minutes!"

//And if you really impress me, I might be negotiated into two dances,// Jonothon decided, pleased that this particular strategy seemed to be working. //Does that sound fair, luv?//v

"Depends," said Ariel, smirking a little as she looked thoughtful. "Would it have to be two dances in a row, or could I save the second one for later?"

//A dance up front, and one to hold in storage for a rainy day, if you want,// Jono replied, shrugging. //When you collect on th'second dance doesn't matter much to me, luv.//

He was easy that way.

"Yeah, we'll see what you say about that when I actually collect it," said Ariel with a roll of her eyes and a smirk. "But you're on. Definitely."
