It was probably important to note here that Jonothon really didn't hate life, the universe, and everything. But when faced with the option of spending a day in the library hiding from the brunch, all full of people and space dolphins and food, he really had found himself deciding that it was his only option, thank you so very much.

And, once he'd done his usual duties for the day, he was going to spend the rest of his shift leaning back into a chair and reading a Douglas Adams book about some sort of holistic detective, just to get this weird urge to start decorating the place with bowls of petunias out of his system.

Bloody space dolphins.

It suited her?

She... supposed that was 'yes, she'd said it wrong' but that it was a... good thing. Apparently.

"I don't quite know?" she said, a bit sheepishly. "I ain't never tried writing stuff before."

//Well, do you know how to read sheet music, at least?//

He wouldn't hold it against her if she couldn't, but it would complicate matters slightly if that was the case.

"...No," she said, with a bit of a sigh. "I should learn that, right?"

//You don't have to,// he noted. //If yer planning on having somebody else play and sing for you. But lip-synching is cheating.//

Well, it was. At least if you were doing so to somebody else's voice. Plenty of big-name artists synched to their own recorded voices in concert, so that they wouldn't injure themselves.

She wrinkled her nose. "No way," Ino said, "what'd be the point of that?"

//Atta gel.// See? It wasn't difficult to stay on Jono's good side about this sort of thing. //So, you want to dabble in th'music industry, but you don't read any music, and you don't play any instruments.//

He tapped his foot against the floor, looking toward the ceiling thoughtfully.

//Which isn't as bad as it sounds, really. I've heard you sing. But you'll need a band. A lead guitar, at least. Percussion all th'better. And, of course, songs.//

"Why a band?" she asked curiously. Not arguing--just curious. "There's lots of solo artists, aren't there?"

Ino tugged at her hair. "You sure it ain't as bad? 'Cause I don't have none of that." Just a voice, really.

//Plenty. But they can all accompanty themselves with an instrument of some sort,// Jono pointed out. //So, unless you were hoping to learn guitar or piano or something while yer at it...//

He shrugged.

//Chasing a dream doesn't fall into place all on its own, luv. It takes work. But yer a bright one, I'm certain you knew that already.//

"Had a clue 'bout it," she said, looking thoughtful. "Probably could pick up an instrument--but gettin' someone who knows what they're doin' from the start might be better?"

//Easier, at least. And they might be able to teach you as you go,// Jono pointed out. //Now, what were you going to do about yer as-of-yet nonexistant set list?//

Ino chewed her lip.

"Either--learn enough to write my own?" she said slowly. "Or find someone who has got song written that'd be okay with me singing them?"

//You want my advice, luv, learn an arseload of cover songs while yer at it. Things that people know, that they'll want to hear. Because nobody hits it big overnight unless they've got Walt bloody Disney backing them up, and yer not Miley Cyrus.//

Sorry, Ino. It was a horrible truth.

//Yer big break, should you be lucky enough to get one, will probably come after years of playing for drunks who aren't listening to you in bars what hardly pay enough quid for you to get a beer after th'show, singing songs you don't even like because that's what yer two audience members who are paying attention want to hear.//

She nodded slowly.

"Learnin' the cover songs--that's probably the easiest bit for me," she said, studying her hands. "'Cause you can learn a lot just by listenin' to the radio and I do that all the time."

//They'll want classics, too. You'll want to sing Rhianna, and they'll want Patsy Cline. And then, when you learn Crazy, they'll demand Oops, I Did It Again, instead.//

Because audiences were a pack of vicious, bloodthirsty creatures.

"So I've got to try and learn everything ever?"

Which was both intimidating and dismaying.

//Within reason. If they want Oops, I Did It Again, and all you know is Toxic, they can be fairly forgiving, so long as you promise that you'll learn it as soon as you can.//

Jono shrugged.

//Eventually, you'll be able to start sneaking yer own work in there, and people will be actually listening. That's where it really starts, when they can give you feedback on yer own material.//

"Lots of work," she noted, but not like she was really off-put by it. Just... lots of work.

Perhaps that was better, even, for her cover.

"So to start with, I need to--learn more songs?" she checked. "And find a... band. And have some original material even if I can't sing it during sets yet?"

//Provided, of course, you get to th'point where you get sets,// Jono agreed. //You'll probably start off busking on th'side of the road somewhere before you ever make it into a bar. And you'll likely need a manager for that much, unless yer capable of self-management, as well.//

He just kept on heaping on the good news, didn't he?

"So," she said, setting her chin. "From the very bottom, then. What'll I have to do."

//Unless, of course, you get lucky. Audition for things. Put yerself out there. Nobody makes it to th'top without trying.//

Oh, wow. A wistful note made its way into that one, yes.

She gave him a considering glance. "You okay with the fact that I'm bugging you with this?"

Because she, uh, didn't have his problem there. And, well...

Jono shrugged.

//Tell me, honestly, if I've said a single thing that you've known for a fact since you started this conversation, and I'll tell you just how much I've minded sharing it.//

"That I'd be startin' off in a pretty sorry position?" she said, dubiously.

Everything else was new, yes.

//Then yer not wasting my time,// Jono informed her, shrugging. //And if yer not wasting my time, then I don't mind.//

It would be a different story entirely if she was drilling him for information about a sore spot that she already knew everything about.

Ino would never be that cruel for no reason. With reason, well... Jono was unlikely to give her reason.

"I'll keep that in mind," she promised, toying with her hair. "You got an idea 'bout--where I should start to learn?"

Or would he rather watch her flail around like a fish out of water?
