Ethics [Thursday, October 21, 2nd period]

For the last few semesters, Anakin had called on his experiences in the latter part of the Clone Wars for the midterm subject matter. With Leia on the island, that wasn't exactly a safe area for him to explore right now.

"Today we talk about wrath," he began, pacing through the cramped, dirty quarters of the ship the students found themselves aboard. "Last week, my wife used up the last of my hair gel, so I leveled the apartment and we had to move," he said, then gave them all a little smile. "Not really." He'd just sulked for an hour. Anakin wasn't exactly the most mature person, well, ever.

"When I was thirteen years old," he said, "and had built my first lightsaber, my master and I were sent on an assignment to protect a diplomatic vessel from attack from a T'surr slaver named Krayn." We waved his hand and the giant blue alien appeared in the center of the room. "Our mission was simple: to disable Krayn's ship and return to our own."

He held up a finger: "However. Krayn was a slaver, and had been for almost a decade. He had ruined countless lives, had raided slaves from a multitude of systems--" including Tatooine, but Anakin wouldn't be mentioning that, "--and his slaves were used to process spice: itself an illegal, dangerous narcotic in our galaxy, which had made him very, very rich, not to mention extremely powerful. Your choice in the assignment today is simple: follow your master and disable the weapons systems of this ship and escape, or break off on your own and try to track down Krayn and free the slaves on this vessel."

With a gesture from Anakin, lightsaber hilts appeared in the air above each student. "Remember what you have learned about the dangers of anger and pride. Choose wisely. May the Force be with you. You may pair up with a fellow student if you'd like."

James looked around the ship's room as if it held clues on where to go. Well.

He grabbed the sword hilt when it appeared and made the glowing blade appear after a moment of fiddling, making sure he could use the weapon without injuring himself or others (unintentionally).

He marched to the door, jaw set, ready to see this through.

...um, yeah, Kennedy would be over here geeking over this lightsaber. How freaking cool was this? And could she get one? Because dude.

This was way more sci-fi-geek than Kennedy was prepared for.

"Trippy," she remarked with an amused little quirk of her lips as she took stock of the engine room and the frozen figures with guns pointed at her. Luckily she'd done a couple of fighty-type missions with Anakin and some of the Jedi kids before, so she had a pretty good idea of how you were supposed to switch the lightsaber on.

It took her a second to figure out where the power switch on hers was (see above re: sci-fi geek), but once she did and she thumbed it on and the blade crackled to life with that funky snap-hiss noise?

"Holy freaking shit. Awesome."

...and then the simulation started up, and she had to start running like hell with a yelp, and that was how Kennedy discovered that her reflexes were, in fact, not good enough to deflect blaster bolts with a blade that had no mass what the hell how did you get a feel for this thing?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, there was the mission, and there was the fact that there were slaves on this ship. Kennedy? Not so much a fan of the latter idea.

She could hear Constance now, telling her to stay focused on the mission, but nothing about the concept of letting something that screwed up keep happening if she could stop it sat well with her. And she figured, the current Slayer hadn't exactly saved the world, what was it, four times now by following the rules. ('cause if she did, she wouldn't have cut off the Council, and Kennedy might actually know more about what she was doing.)

So off into the unknown it was. The Jedi Master wasn't that cute to her anyway.

Great. Medusalith was at a definite disadvantage here without the use of her hair.

Besides which, she didn't understand the lesson. Wasn't the only sensible thing to do here to follow orders? What did following orders have to do with wrath?

"Sir," Scully said, slightly anxious. "Is there a reason we can't achieve both objectives? I would assume there's a reason why the weapons system is to be disabled, but not the engines?" And the slaves freed.

Scully obeyed orders. To a point. She glanced at Medusalith, who was looking perplexed. "Something confusing you, Medusa?"

"I feel as if I'm missing some nuance. What does this have to do with wrath?" she asked. "Isn't it only sensible to follow your orders?"

Scully paused while checking the blaster she'd been given-- very similar to Leia's from Gun Club. "It is. Especially if there's a higher objective." She tilted her head, studying Medusa. "But then there's the fact that most people couldn't leave the slaves here, even if ordered to."

Medusalith was working on something along the lines of 'then why would we be ordered to?' but it hadn't quite formed, yet, so what came out of her mouth was, "Why?"

She was from the special Germany, okay?

Hoo boy. Scully's brows climbed toward her hair, but she said mildly, "Well, because slavery is ugly, and most would be very upset about it. And I believe that the challenge here is supposed to illustrate-- poor judgment, from an excess of anger at the situation." Instead of just an overly compassionate or ill-thought-out impulse.

"I see," Medusalith said slowly, even though she was still kind of confused. Scully's words just backed up her initial instinct that the correct thing to do was complete the mission as ordered, but that was unfortunate for the slaves.

It would probably help if she understood what a slave was, or felt she could ask without giving away that something was very wrong here.
