French Study Group - Library [Monday after classes]

"Bonjour," Sookie said, and if the straw-colored hair and huge brown eyes hadn't tipped everyone off as to who she was, that horrible accent had likely done it. "I know some of you are using an extra 'e' on the ends of your French nouns and verbs and adjectives today, or you're used to having one and it's gone, but we're still going to study, okay? Because a little gender-change isn't going to stand in the way of learning français. 'Specially not when we're talking about how to ask someone to Homecoming!"

Pause.

"...maybe wait until this wears off. Just a suggestion."

"Wait until it wears off." Even as a boy, Emma had an epic bitchface. "Here's some vocabulary basics to get you started. So let's all pretend we don't know each other, to save later embarrassment, and go flirt."

"Yeah, I won't quite fill out one this way, either," Sookie frowned. "But we're not stuck, honey. We'll change back. Sometimes the island does this."

"Why?" Rilla demanded, stamping her, well, enormous foot. It was quite a look. "I don't want to be a boy. I have three brothers. That's quite enough."

"Because the island is cruel and strange things happen here," she said with a shrug. "I"m not really thrilled that I look like a weird mashup of my brother and myself, either, but it'll go away. It did last year."

"I don't look at all like Walter, thank heavens," Rilla replied. "I suppose I look a bit like Shirley. Which doesn't really help matters. I wish to look like myself."

"Rilla, I know. None of us likes being stuck like this." A few did, and she'd heard them, but that was neither here nor there. "I miss having long hair and curves and soft skin and all that, too. We'll get it back, sweetie. Just be patient. Getting upset is pointless."

"Do you know how hard it is to bathe and not look at anything?" Rilla hissed.

"Sweetie, just look. That's yours," Sookie sighed, rubbing a temple. "It's not like you're peeking at a boy."

"Of course it is," Rilla declared oh-so-reasonably. "I don't normally have one."

"Yes, but that's yours now," Sookie replied, kind of starting to lose her cool. "I don't normally have one either and it's not like I know my way around one, but in the name of convenience and hygiene, we have to deal! So look down or you are going to slip in the shower and break your neck, and then all the paramedics are going to see you naked like this, too."

Rilla sulked some more. "Would I be quite unconscious?" she finally asked.

Rilla logic was special.

"Probably quite dead. Besides, don't you want to get married someday?" Sookie wondered. "You're going to have to look at one then, too. Might as well look now so you're not startled."

Rilla's eyes bugged out. "Why would I have to look at it?"

...on her list of 'things to do today,' once she'd figured out she'd be a boy for the duration, Sookie had included: eat breakfast, visit the bank, do the French club thing with Emma, check on Bobby at some point.

Things not on that list: give Rilla a birds and bees lesson.

"...oh dear god, tell me you know where babies come from."

Rilla blushed. "...generally?"

No, not at all.

"So you know all about sex," Sookie asked, tilting her head. "And how your current gentlemanly business would be involved in that?"

She suspected that would be a resounding 'no.'

More blushing.

"No," she admitted miserably. "But I am not wed! I don't need to know!"

"Yes, you do," Sookie said, staring at her. "So you can make informed decisions. It's a different time, Rilla. They're really not going to tell you until you're married?"

And probably not much then.

"Of course not," Rilla declared. "Why would I need to know? Aside from...days like today?"

"There's a number of sex-oriented courses and you might be put in one," Sookie replied, easily. "There's also days when your hormones'll go crazy thanks to the island and you'll want to know things for then."

"Or I could hide in my room forever," Rilla offered hopefully.

"And never have babies, or experience the joys of lovemaking," Sookie said like a romantic dork.

"I don't like babies," Rilla admitted, expecting Sookie, like her mother and sisters before her, to be Quite Shocked.

"Maybe not now, but when you're older," Sookie offered. "I'm not really looking to get pregnant anytime soon, either. But you'll like sex. I'm a virgin myself and I'm positive on that point."

Rilla turned scarlet.

"Um."

"We'll talk when we're girls again," Sookie assured her, reaching out to pat Rilla's shoulder.

Rilla's shoulders slumped. "Which hopefully comes soon."

Sookie glanced over with a raised brow. << No kidding. How do you get to fourteen without even knowing? I mean, virgin over here, but I'm not wholly inexperienced, and it's going to be hard to explain things without her making assumptions. >>

<< More sheltered than usual? >> Emma guessed. << You'd think older girls would have gossiped or something. I knew the basics even before I manifested as a telepath. >>

And then it was hard not to know the details.

<< I've always known, just 'cause I manifested when I was so little, >> Sookie said, shaking her head. << But even without a leg up, sex is kind of everywhere. She's from the past, but Rilla's been here months! How do you miss comprehension of tab A into slot B? >>

Pause.

<< Oh god I'm going to have to explain that to her. >>

<< Please, Emma, I'm not anywhere near qualified to give her the AP version. I can barely manage the pre-requisite, test-out version of this theoretical course, >> Sookie snorted telepathically, rolling her eyes. << Maybe I can just give her a book. >>
