Macro-Tactics, Monday

Kerrigan was all stalking, abrupt motions today - an irritability born of a fruitless week spent chasing a protoss Dark Templar around some ruins on Ulaan. Not that those were particularly obvious details.

She did not look like she was interested in long lectures today.

"Whoever has the biggest guns tends to win the war," she said, tersely. "New tech is always going to give you an advantage. It's also going to eat through your finances like a bad mold. You have to think about what you go for: maneuverability? Sheer firepower? Air superiority? You can't bank on everything, or you're going to be broke."

She motioned for her TAs to distribute some schematics to the class.

"Here's some examples of innovation from my time and world," she said. "Now here's a thought experiment. If you're fighting a war on your own homefront, what would you go for? What would work best for the terrain? Heavy tanks might look like a cool idea, but get them stuck in the mountains and they're sitting ducks. Take these schematics as an example, and sort out in which direction you'd want to develop your tech. Do you go for mobility, or firepower? Quicker deployment, or armored caravans? Speed or strength? Long-distance or short? Everyone's only got so much cash to throw at something."

"I thought that surprise was pretty much universally deadly, though," Triela pointed out with a slight frown.

Cloud looked away, grinning a little. "Oh yes, but surprise can be delivered in many ways." Large blunt objects were pretty surprising, actually. "I do get your point though." Karla had already taught him the benefits of stealth, after all. "A solution without much noise can also manage to keep more people alive in the aftermath."

Triela nodded. "Exactly." She smiled just a bit. "Not that I have anything against helicopters or anything, they're just not exactly stealthy."

Whenever Cloud thought about someone being 'stealthy', he saw Yuffie...who wasn't precisely invisible, personality wise -he knew better to judge her from only that but still-. "It's a common sight on movies here, to have people dropped from a helicopter." That wasn't stealthy neither, although sometimes it seemed that way.

"Although, a really silent, invisible ship...sounds too good to be true." And then what, drop a massive destruction bomb on the enemy? Yeah right.

"Yeah, we don't have anything like that," Triela shrugged. "Usually the best way to be stealthy is to stay on foot."

"So you know about stealth", said, not really asking. "Me...not so much." Even without the sword, his hair and eyes weren't helping him if he wanted to go unnoticed. Actually, your average SOLDIER of the upper classes didn't do stealth too often, at least by the looks.

"Stealth is really just for setting up a hard, fast strike." Triela shrugged. It was stealth up until the shooting started, then everyone died.

"That if you are going to fight no matter what." He could see the use of stealth to avoid a fight, too. "But if in the end stealth is just to get a good first shot, you ca't only focus on being invisible." You also had to be deadly, then.

"Well, yeah. You need to be able to ensure that when you do hit, you make it count." And everyone dies before the surprise wears off.
