Library, Tuesday

Rinoa was oddly quiet as she opened the library. She'd had a messy still in massive, huge SP discussion with That Man, also known as her father, who had shown up here like he had some right after everything they'd been through. She wasn't sure how she felt about that.

The library was open, and Rinoa was distracting herself with busywork.

"Hey, Rinoa," Henry said on his way past the counter with the mail. "No romance novel today?"

"Not today," she said, frowning at the paperwork. "I'm too irritable. I can't focus well enough to appreciate a book."

Which was always a frustrating state of mind, for a book-lover.

"Library thing or personal thing?" Henry asked. "And if it's a library thing, how can I fix it?"

"Personal thing," she promised quickly, giving her employer a reassuring smile. "It's nothing. Just the guest I had this weekend."

Uninvited, unwanted, and still able to tug at her in strange ways. Stupid father.

"Sorry," Henry nodded. "I had a good visit, but I got the impression not everyone did."

"It's my father," Rinoa admitted. "He's the most stubborn, pig-headed, impossible man I've ever met."

None of which had passed on to Rinoa, of course.

"I don't know why he even bothered to come." She lifted her shoulders. "I'm glad you had a nice weekend. Family? Friends?"

"Maybe he loves you. Sometimes they're just crap at showing it." That would be Henry's father, yes. "And a little of both. My wife came out."

"Maybe," she grumbled, not sounding convinced. "All he ever did was lock me up in my room."

To be fair, Rinoa attracted trouble like she was carrying around magnets for it.

"I didn't know you were married," she said.

"Okay, yeah, I can see why that would cause a few little issues," Henry understated. "Not everybody knows. I don't wear a ring. She stayed in Chicago -- Maryland isn't forever for me, and moving takes a lot out of you." He shrugged a little. "I make it home every six weeks or so."

Without his wife, General Fury had decided to use his military background as a basis for raising his child. It had gone ... about as well as Henry might have expected, in Rinoa's case.

"It must be hard," she said. "Is that why you don't wear the ring? So you don't get questions about her?"

"And because I'm truly excellent at losing things like that," Henry answered. "No watch, either. You don't want to know the contortions I went through before people started carrying cell phones."

"I usually lose things I can set down," she said. "I always leave my rings around my neck. That way, they're never lost; they're always with me."

She held the necklace out for him to see: a simple chain with two rings placed on it.

"It looks nice on you," Henry said, noncommittally. It wouldn't solve his problem, but that wasn't Rinoa's fault. "Are those special rings, or just pretty ones?"

"This one was my mother's wedding ring," she said, indicated the plain one. "And the other was given to me by a friend. To protect me."

Okay, she'd swiped it, at first, but he'd let her keep it even when he thought he might not get it back. That counted.
