There was a unicorn in the library.

Wesley wasn't sure if it was part of his job to get it to leave or anything, but it didn't seem to be doing anything wrong and hey, for all he knew it was a student who was currently suffering from some island weirdness he just didn't know about.

While he sat at the desk and tried to do some homework and not think about Parents' Weekend, the unicorn came up to him, nudged his arm with its head, and said frankly, "Your eyes are gorgeous."

Uh.

"Thank you?" he said hesitantly.

"I love your accent," the unicorn continued. "It's so soothing."

Yeah, the library was going to be weird today.

And his unicorn!

When Katniss came into the library, it was with a unicorn on her heels telling her that she had beautiful hair. She was rather firmly ignoring it. "Afternoon, Wesley. Do you know what's wrong with these horses, by chance?"

"They appear to be on some sort of drug or something to that effect," he hypothesized solemnly. "They're, er, rather cheery."

And he was just going to leave that "horses" thing alone, because he did not think he could manage to explain unicorns to Katniss.

"Well, that's grim," Katniss decided.

"Do you suppose that the things on their heads are a side effect?" she wondered, even as her unicorn added, "You're so clever!"

"Er. No. No, I think that's just the... the breed," he ventured.

"You're quite the teacher," his unicorn said brightly. "And very knowledgable. A good catch, if you ask me."

Wesley blushed fiercely and looked pointedly away. He'd almost preferred the onions.

"They certainly are kind," Katniss offered, smiling a little and blushing herself. "And not entirely lying, either -- you are a good teacher."

She didn't quite believe the compliments directed at her, though.

"And you are quite clever," he replied in kind. He wasn't gonna try to address the other unicorn comment about her hair, though. Because him complimenting girls' appearances? Kind of a recipe for intense awkwardness.

"I'm lucky," she corrected.

"And you're far more pretty than you thi -- " one of the unicorns neighed before Katniss started talking over it.

"How are you?" she asked Wesley. "Ready for the weekend?"

"Most emphatically not, but I suspect a great deal of denial should do the trick," he said dryly. "And yourself? You said you were... nervous about your guests."

"Still am," she said, tapping her fingers together a little. "I'm half-tempted to go down to the bar and see if I can bribe them to refuse to serve Haymitch. I'd like to meet your father, though, if you're not going to try and lock him in a closet until the weekend's over."

Katniss meeting his dad was just about the last thing Wesley wanted, except maybe an apocalypse, but it would be rude to say so and that was something he was not willing to be.

"I suppose," he said slowly. He wanted to warn her that Roger Wyndam-Pryce was by far one of the most least pleasant people he'd ever met, but again, therein lay rudeness.

She slanted a look at him, adding, "And I'd like to give him a piece of my mind, but I'll mind my tongue, if that'll make you feel better about it."

He briefly entertained himself with the visual of Katniss giving his dad a talking-to, half-smiled, and nodded. "That would be appreciated."

"You can meet Haymitch, too," she offered. She pointedly didn't mention Peeta, since that was a disastrous idea. "I'm sure it'll be unavoidable."

Oh, definitely. Wesley was totally one hundred percent not going to meet Peeta. At all. Not even a little.

It would be kind of cool to meet Haymitch, though, just from what Wes'd heard of him. Mentors sounded sort of like Watchers, and on merit of that alone it'd be interesting to talk to him a bit. "That'd be interesting," he said thoughtfully.

"Now, you said you were thinking of bribing the bar not to serve him," he said, suddenly thinking of something. "If you need any help with that, I - well, I happen to know one of the bartenders. Or at least, she knows me. Or someone who looks like me. Regardless, I'd be happy to put in the request for you."

"Oh, that'd be wonderful," she said, eyes widening for a moment. "I was just going to throw a bunch of my winnings at them with a picture of Haymitch, but if you had an in, that would be better, I'm sure." She paused, and added, "Haymitch will likely hate it, though."

Wesley grinned. "Well, I'll talk to her for you. I'm not entirely sure she isn't mad in some way, but I assume she'll come through."

"Some of the most interesting people are probably mad," she assured him. "I'm probably at least a little bit crazy."

Huh. That was a weird thought. "I'm not," he said, considering it. "Or at least, not to my knowledge."

"No, you seem very sane," she promised. "But a lot of people here are probably at least a little bit gone. There's too much...randomness not to."
