Shop Class #3

Mac is sitting in his chair as the students file in.

"I hope you remembered your homework today, because that's the only way you are going to pass today's assignment."

Mac pulls out his remote and a hallway appears in front of them. At the other end of the hallway is a table filled with snack cakes and hamdingers.

"The hallway uses a multitude of security lasers at a variety of heights and angles. Each of you will need to produce your smoke screen to reveal the lasers and then cross the hallway without tripping the alarm. Oh and this is an individual test today, no groups."

"Please provide me with a list of materials you need for the smoke screen and we'll have the Danger Shop provide them for you."

Illyana looked at her list. She would need chalk dust, a low velocity fan and a few industrial flares.

"I need pool chlorine and nonsilicone brake fluid, a bucket and a cup."

When these are produced, Han mixes two measures of the chlorine and three of the brake fluid in the bucket. Thick, black noxious smoke roils out.

"Don't breathe it," he warns, studying the laser pattern. In a few seconds he has the safe route planned and is through to the table.

"I need some dry ice and either a plastic cooler or a Pyrex glass container, a piece of black paper, a piece of cardboard, and some rubbing alcohol."

Mac punches a couple of buttons on the remote and the items Illyana needs appears.

"There you go Illyana. Let's see you do your stuff."

Mac fiddles with the remote and the items appear before Sam.

"Just a reminder Carter... I'll need to get your class idea before the end of tomorrow so I can get everything programmed into this infernal thing. And if anybody needs to bring anything I'll need to post it as homework."

Sam carefully slices the piece of paper and cardboard with the swiss army knife. She places the cardboard in the bottom of the Pyrex container, then the black paper on top of that.

She pours the rubbing alcohol onto the paper, where it is absorbed. She then uses tongs to place the dry ice on the paper. The resulting clouds/fog cover make it possible to see the lasers and she makes it through the pattern without incident.

Finished, she nodded at Mac about the assignment and waited to see if anyone else needed help. "Do you want to talk about the assignment now, or wait until after class?"

"Sure not a problem. What did you have in mind?"

[OOC: Your icon's hair is very mullet-like. The Mac endorses your iconage with with high praise]

She climbed up on one of the counters and took a seat, so they were looking at each other eye to eye ~~or mullet to mullet~~. "I'd like to focus on teamwork, if you don't mind. I know you're focusing on projects that build originality and creativity, but I think learning to work with someone else is equally important."

Mac raises his eyebrows and nods in approval. "That's another aspect of the class I was hoping to explore as well. It'll take some coordination but I like where you're going with this."

((I was going to make an OOC post today in order to get the entire class's time zone to help organize teams. How wild is that?

Sam preens at the approval. "I think we can do this as teams of two, like withe vault assignment."

She pulls a notebook out of her messenger bag and draws a quick sketch. "I'd like a device on a timer, that's floating above the floor of the room. It'll be rigged to 'explode' after a certain amount of time."

"There's an instruction manual, but it's in a code. One person on the team should be given a rudimentary knowledge of the code ahead of time. The other will be in charge of 'disarming' the device according to the instructions."

"The tricky part, though, is that the device moves up and down at unpredictible intervals. If it touches the floor or the people who are working underneath it, everyone explodes. If you want bigger teams, the other people can be in charge of keeping the device off the floor without making physical contact."

((ooc: Okay, the same mindset thing's a little odd...but in a good way?))

"No keep with the pairing of people... and follow your idea through completion. Make sure you supply the class with enough detail so they understand the challenge perfectly."

"If someone doesn't have a partner, I'll partner up with them."

"Will you provide the code book itself and do you have it made already?"

((Fandom High. We all share the same brain. In a good way. Is there going to be an actual codebook?))

"Okay," Sam said, making notes in her notebook. "Any suggestions on how to phrase things so they make more sense than what I just told you?" She smiled.

"I'll provide the code book, but I haven't finished making it yet."

((I'd love for there to be, but my photoshop fu is non-existent. The SG ep I ganked the idea from used Phoenician.))

I'm gonna need sugar, salt peter, a pot, and some matches.

Oh, and I'm gonna need something to heat some stuff up with, like, a low flame from a bunsen burner or stove or something.

"I'd break it down into bullet points and make sure that if anyone has any questions that they asked them first before attempting the assignment."

((Make a separate OOC post for questions regarding the assignments. I keep forgetting to do that.))

Sam makes another note. "Okay. That sounds good."

She hops down off the counter. "Are you going to be around later? I'd like to drop the parts o' Harley off sometime this afternoon, if that's okay."

((Ditto.))

Mac fiddles with the remote and the sugar, salt peter, a pot and matches appears.

Along with a toaster.

*stares at the toaster for a few seconds*

Ummm, sir? This isn't exactly what I meant.

Mac shrugs.

"I've got some work to do on the emitters this afternoon. Feel free to drop them off then."

((Just make a separate post.))

"Great, thanks."

She proceeds to watch the rest of the class from her perch on the counter, occasionally looking up from complicated equations to observe and make sure no one needs help.

"Well if you're going to be that way about it." Mac says with a small smile.

He fiddles again and a hot plate appears.

"Will that work?"

I think so. *goes about measuring the salt peter and sugar in proper proportions ~~and since this is MacGyver, those proportions shall not be divulged to the audience at home~~, and heating them in the pot. Before the mixture solidifies, she shoves a few matches in the top to act as fuses*

Ta-da. Should produce enough white smoke to fill a city block.

"I'm going to need a big bottle of baby powder (unscented, because I'm allergic to the scented stuff) and a fan." She gives Mac a little smile and a shrug. "It's not high tech, but it works."

When the items appear, she shoots the baby powder into the air in front of the fan, and the white cloud exposes the lasers. After a moment, and another puff of powder, she wiggles her way through to the other side, covered in white powder. "Didn't think about that," she mutters as she pick up a twinkie.

"Good job. Now just navigate the laser beams and you get an A for the day."

Mac laughs and fiddles with the controls and Rogue is clean again.

"Only virtual baby powder. Good job."
