"'Do unto others as you would have done unto you,'" Anakin quoted as the students found their seats. "On this planet, that phrase is known as the Golden Rule. It sounds quite altruistic, which might be why they are more than a few more cynical versions of it around: 'do unto others before they can do unto you,' and the like. The rule also seems to be assuming that everyone wants the same things done to them. But what if you don't mind getting poked in the stomach? Does it follow that you could aimlessly poke people? What if you don't see anything wrong with stealing, or killing, or hating entire groups of people?"

He shrugged. "I suppose the Golden Rule could be simplified as 'be nice to people, so they'll be nice to you' but out here in the real world, we all know it doesn't exactly work like that, and the concept could also be reinterpreted as 'it doesn't bother me, so why does it bother you?' Is this a case of aiming for an ideal and hoping that it will cause a ripple effect of positive things, or something overly simplistic that taken to its logical extreme renders itself useless?"

He smiled. "I like to ask nice, easy questions."

A point that Jono still didn't like the taste of, so to speak. He didn't relax, really, as he shook his head and looked down again.

"It's true." She answered, truthful again. Azula could lose Jono with this and it was far too risky a gamble. But somehow she felt that this was a way to go. "During the height of the war my view of the world was limited. It was the Fire Nation and nothing else but I made alliances with enemies and brought them to my side and I never pursued people out of hate."

The one time she did... she was crazy.

"I only brought up your world to point out no world is perfect. You have all this technology and advances my people can only dream of and yet from what I've observed people with abilities, powers things that make them special and who they are are shunned and hated. So, yes, my values are different from yours and I know it makes you uncomfortable and the world you come from discomfit me."

//Th'world I come from discomfits me,// Jono replied, his voice dropping down to something quiet and hollow and bitter. //I'm not here to judge anybody's worlds, gel. It's their actions that speak so much louder, when push comes to shove.//

He shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest and bunching his shoulders a bit.

//I'm not being entirely fair, drawing conclusions without knowing about circumstances, about motives. But I do have th'right to be ill at ease, keeping company with somebody who professes not to place value on th'lives of others.//

"I don't place value on the lives of my enemies," she clarified and lied. "It's not practical especially during war time. Would you prefer I lied to you?"

Azula tilted her head. "But my offer to help you control your fire is genuine. If you choose not to continue then so be it."

Jono couldn't sink any farther into his jacket at this point if he tried. And yes, he was trying.

//We'll see,// he said, vaguely. Talking about his flames in front of everyone in the classroom had just made this a whole new level of uncomfortable. //Later.//

Azula shook her head. That shame about his power really had to go. He was worse than Zuko was and here she thought there could never be someone worse than her brother when it came to self hate.

"Whatever you wish, Jono."
