Office Hours - Tuesday 25.10

Charlie's alternating between solving sudoku puzzles and finishing up the lesson planning for tomorrow. The door is open though, for anyone that might want to visit ~~or is just bored~~.

"You think we can really do this?" Angelus asked. "Be interesting to see what we come up with. You know not for nothing there's places that would publish something like that. Not in this dimension, probably, but back home."

"Of course we can do this," said Charlie, looking a little bewildered at the suggestion that they couldn't. "It's an interesting problem, anyway."

"These are good categories to start with," Angelus said. "Off the top of my head, there's also issues like migration. Not every vamp stays in one place. Especially those that kill. Hard to maintain a steady diet if you've got the remaining half of the town coming at you with pitchforks."

"Oh, right, I didn't think about that." Charlie took the paper back and added migrasion? to the list. He looked up again, frowning a little. "I think you're going to tell me about vampires. What you are, how you live, that kind of thing."

"I'm an open book," Angelus dragged a spare chair over so he could prop one foot up on it. "I can start by telling you we're not all alike. Not everybody drinks human blood, not everybody drinks to kill. Some follow strict rules about what passes their lips, others take whatever crosses their path."

"You can drink other things than human blood?" Charlie looked surprised. "Like what? Because that can potentially add to our numbers, I should think."

"Animal blood," Angelus said. "Pig is most common, but others fall into the scheme as well. Blood also doesn't have to come directly from the vic- uh, person. Some vamps live by robbing blood banks."

"That's not nice," Charlie pointed out. He was scribbling down ideas he got as Angelus talked.

"You'd rather they bite the necks directly?" Angelus countered. "Besides, it's not like they don't need it too. Hardly our fault if human society doesn't want to accomodate us."

"Good point," Charlie nodded, agreeing. "I'm sure some sort of blood bank for Vampires could be possible... But anyway. Migration?"

"We travel," Angelus said. "Or some of us do. Others lay claim to a city and won't leave it for decades if not centuries. But that could be factored in, right? There's kinds of animals that do that too."

"Yeah, we just have to calculate that before putting it into the main calculation."

Angelus tapped his pen against the desk. "Well there's got to be formulas in place already for things like this, right? I mean it's not like scientists go out and physically count all the sparrows in the world. Or am I really misunderstanding the field of ornithology?"

((ooc: would you mind if we finished this? Slow-time as I'm at work for hours and hours today, but I'd really like to finish a conversation with Angelus for once. *sheepish*))

Charlie snickered. "No, they don't, but I'm sure most of the ornithologist would like that. No, it's observations over time, that kind of thing. Did you ever stay in one place for long? I mean, long enough to have a good idea of how many vampires lived in town, how many would pass through over, say, a months time?"

"It would depend on the town," Angelus said. "I ususally stuck to the big cities. Not that I avoided the 'burgs but vamps usually can't hang around the average one Starbucks town without attracting unwanted attention. Well, unless you're on top of a Hellmouth."

"A what?" Charlie asked, blinking. "And, actually, a city might be easier, at least when it comes to a population census over time. Less with the anomalies too, I'd think."

"Hellmouth," Angelus said. "Mouth to hell. Or entrance, if you want to be picky. There's a few of those back on my world. Vampires, demons, and magic tend to converge on them. But it's not a requirement. Most vamps are happy anywhere where it's easy for them to get around in the day. So subways, sewer systems, underground anythings are key."

"New York," Charlie suggested. "Or I guess Rome or London would do as well?"

"Exactly," Angelus said. "That's why I could never understand the whole Anne Rice gig. There is no underground in New Orleans. How's a vamp supposed to make a living?"

"Well, there's then tourists," Charlie said, doubtful. "But from what you've said, I wouldn't have picked New Orleans either." He tapped his pen against his notebook thoughtfully. "How good is your memory?"

"Photographic," Angelus replied. "Well, depending on the situation."
