"You all found your way back," Aly said with a teasing smile as the bell rang for the class to begin. "I'd be impressed, but I've met Fandom students before."

"Before we start, I'd like to introduce my TAs for this term - Ino Yamanaka, Rinoa Heartilly, Percy Jackson, and Nico di Angelo. Four isn't usual, I know, but we're trying something new this time around. I'd like each of the TAs to head up a small group of their classmates. When we work in teams or have small discussions, that's the group you'll be with."

She went to flip over the whiteboard to show the groups she'd set up.

Aly glanced at the groups then back at the class. "If you hate who you're with, talk to me and - yeah, never mind. If you hate who you're with, deal with it. You don't always get to work with your friends when planning a revolution. Pull your desks together, and spend some time getting to know each other if you don't already.

"Last week we talked about the reasons why you personally would rebel against a government. What I'd like you to do today is to stay in the small groups and talk about why you - as a group - would rebel against something. You can look at it seriously or rebel against mandatory cheerleading uniforms for the whole school, but remember, revolutions aren't put together by one person. It's always a group effort. So today, let's start with that."

Proto shrugged. "Yeah, sounds like the armies I'm familiar with. I'd be game for taking a run at them." Now if they could just get the rest of the group to pitch in...

"Really?" Color Rinoa impressed. "We're short-handed and underfunded, at the moment. We had to hire mercenaries on for our last mission."

And she had ended up dating one of them. Details.

Proto's lip twisted ever so slightly. "Mercenaries. Tend to be unreliable." He'd had a few very bad run-ins with a merc group early on in the war, so it was possible Proto was a bit biased.

As was Rinoa, but in the other direction. It didn't help that she kept dating SeeDs, really.

"They were very reliable," she said loyally, with a faint flush on her cheeks, "but they differed greatly from us on approach. They favored more violence than we did."

Such as assassinating the President over kidnapping him.

"Oh." Proto straightened slightly. "Maybe your batch wasn't so bad, then." He approved of violence.

"I guess we got lucky," Rinoa said, reaching up idly to play with the rings on her necklace. "We were trying to avoid an all-out war," and, well, she didn't have nearly the stomach for follow-through that she thought she did, "so we talked them down. Have you ... met some of the bad kind?"

"Nothing but," Proto allowed. "They always tend to run at the worst possible moment."

And for that, Rinoa had to laugh. "Really?" she said. "I can't imagine trying to keep SeeDs away from danger."

They were pragmatic about it, sure, but a mission was a mission. The dangerous ones seemed to be considered the most 'fun.'

"Why be a mercenary if you don't like fighting?" she asked, shaking her head.

"Money?" Proto shrugged. "I don't really know. Getting shot at isn't something I'd do for the fun of it..."

"Me, either," she admitted. "And you can't really believe in the cause if you're just someone hired on. You could easily have been hired by the other side."

"Exactly. And, on top of that, money's not worth your life, you know? What would you spend it on if you died?"

"Maybe some of them are trying to support a family," Rinoa suggested. "If you die, all that money can go to your widow and children. But those wouldn't be the mercenaries I knew. They were all young."

"Huh." Proto shrugged.

"I think that's why I prefer to work with actual soldiers. You can at least figure out why they're fighting, you know?"

Rinoa nodded. "I'm not complaining about mine, though," she said. "They were a much-needed boost. And when everything went crazy, they were the cool heads keeping us in one piece."

Just stay by me, Squall had said. Most girls wouldn't find that romantic. Rinoa was okay with not being most girls.

Proto nodded. "Cool head's important. I guess that't the advantage of professionals?"

"Among other things," she said, smiling fondly to herself.

Okay, so she found guys in uniform to be hot. Sue her.

"So are we really going to rebel against Galbadia, for class?" she asked. "I'm not sure if we're supposed to choose something local."

"Why not? I was going to suggest the U.R.R.S. myself. Best it's something you know about, right?"
