With the hands helping shelve books today, there wasn't too much for Blackagar to be doing. Well, other than wander into the stacks of books and find something to read.

Which was a total hardship for him, you know.

Today's book was about sign language. He was almost certain that Medusa could figure out more without needing overly complicated signals, so it was mostly just for curiosity's sake.

Medusalith swanned into the library with one hand riding shotgun on her shoulder and another scurrying along behind, fussing with her skirts and her hair whenever she stopped. It was fabulous. Like having attendants, only they couldn't talk. Which was probably better than regular attendants, now that she thought about it.

Look, thanks to her new helpers, someone hadn't had to spend all day washing her hair. She was allowed to be in a good mood. "Blackagar?" she called as she looked about for her cousin.

Totally cousin.

Cousins! Really!

One of the hands on the counter very helpfully pointed over toward the stacks of books on language. Because they were working as co-librarian's aides today.

"Thank you," Medusalith said, because it never did to be rude to something just because you couldn't see where it kept its brain. She headed for languages. "Blackagar, look! There are hands!" Like he might not know already.

Yes, he had noticed them, Medusa. But the glee she held for them was enough to garner a smile. How exactly they came to be, he wasn't sure.

But he also wasn't about to object to them when they were just so very helpful in shelving books!

All day. Not spent washing her hair. "Can we keep them?" she asked hopefully.

While that might be nice, it wasn't for the best. They did have to do some things for themselves, you know.

That was all well and good for those of them who grew up locked in a room, but some of them liked having people--or hands--do things for them. "I practically lost a pair of hands coming to this place, you know," she pointed out. "The least you could let me do is keep these replacements that have found their way to us. It's like fate," she argued, and patted the one on her shoulder. It totally made sense in her head. "And they can't even talk back."

...from anyone else that probably would have come off as terribly callous, Medusa.

Instead it only got her an amused eyeroll. Because they both knew he talked just fine when it was to her.

And living without servants was good. It would teach her how non-royalty lived and give perspective.

...but her hair did look very pretty today.

"I'm fine, I don't need perspective." She preened. "Doesn't it?"

Of course she didn't need any. She was perfect and he wasn't about to say anything against a lady.

Had she enjoyed her new classes, at least?

"I think so. One of them is on ethics. The humans seem to have very different ideas about these things." She paused, looked around, and wondered, "Should I have not said that?"

He glanced around at the hands that seemed to make no note of the slip, and then shrugged. As long as those squirrels didn't hear, it should be safe to talk to each other about this, right?

Stupid interfering squirrels. "Anyway," she said with a little shake of her head that sent her hair eddying about in interesting ways. "How are your classes going?"

They both help promise so far. Though he wasn't terribly sure about the female teacher. She struck him as less human than most they'd been around so far.

"How so?" Medusalith wondered. "One of my teachers has unusually-colored eyes, for a human, but other than that she seems quite standard."

Her attitude was different. More like what they were used to back in Attilan.

Did she see the green girl? Green!

"I haven't! Is she from...Germany?" Medusalith asked. She sounded kind of doubtful, though, since surely if someone else from Attilan had been coming they would have been informed. "I'll have to look for her."

No, somewhere else entirely. Which was unfortunate, if you asked him. It was a fetching shade of green.

...not nearly as fetching as Medusa, of course.

Well, obviously. She wasn't even green. Except for the hair, she looked rather boring, if you asked her, but at least it was an aesthetically pleasing sort of boring.

No one would ever accuse her of having low self-esteem.

"Where do you find green people?" she wondered. "Besides Germany."

Well... that was a good question, actually. Did they have people like them anywhere else back home?

They really needed to research this one.

"I don't know." This was where the millennia of isolation bit them in the ass. "I don't see how they could," because she hadn't heard of mutants yet, "but we'll have to find out. Perhaps we could ask the green girl where she is from. And the flyer?"

That might be the best option. And they had plenty of these books to check on it as well!

That book on the Yetis seemed promising!

...yeah, isolation wasn't the best thing ever.

"And there's that internet thing!"

This could not end well.

Yes, how was the internet... thing? He hadn't really looked too much at it.

WHICH WAS FOR THE BEST ALL AROUND.

"I don't know," she admitted, "but how difficult can it be? Many of the students use it frequently. I believe my roommate is fond of it."

Then clearly they could manage it. They were smarter than the humans here, right?

"Well, of course," Medusalith agreed. "I only hope it's not all arranged by their funny human logic."

...oh, honey, that's still really too much to hope.

It was mechanical. They couldn't have done anything to that. It was impossible!

"I'm sure you're right," Medusalith said. He usually was, so far as she could tell. "Have you met any of the other new students, or just the green girl? I'm afraid I've been avoiding them. I suppose I should rectify that..."

Not too many, really. Though he really should try to meet more of them. Even if the library was more than enough to keep him satisfied.

Well, that and his cousin.

Cousin. Yes.

She most certainly hoped she came into consideration. "And Lockjaw," she said. "We should really take him out more often. Keep him from getting into mischief."

Like trying to visit the nearby land of Virginia? Because if that dog came back with an odd bit of metal to gnaw on, he was going to be very upset.

Very upset.

"Yes," Medusalith agreed, "but you really shouldn't be surprised."

Just as long as he didn't come back with an entire Mini Cooper to gnaw on...

Not since that first time, at least.

...maybe they should get him a few bones to chew on.

"Or a cow of his very own..."

Of course, he'd probably just befriend it.

Well, that had potential.

Somewhere, a cow was cringing in terror.

That poor cow. It would get used to its new, slobber-covered life.

...eventually.

"We couldn't keep a cow in the dorms, though." She pondered. "Perhaps a very small cow. No." She shook her head to clear it of this silliness. "We're much better off finding him some very large chew toys."

Like the cow!

There was a pet store in town, wasn't there? They could go there and see what the largest things they carried were.

Or a cow!

"We should do that," Medusalith agreed. "Sometime soon."

Maybe they would have a squeaky cow, so that some poor bovine would be spared.

Or a The Thing chew toy.

They were busy making sure Lockjaw got plenty of ear scritches.

Really.

And then perhaps they could attempt human food again? ~~Like a date~~.

"We should do that," she agreed ~~like a date~~. "But not the sushi. Definitely not the sushi."

By the end of the day, she'd be able to confirm that Italian food wasn't crazy!
