Ethics [Thursday, September 2, 2nd period]

Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance-as the door clicked shut behind him. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry. "You may address me either as Master Skywalker or Professor Skywalker. This is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are, if I don't recognize you already--and move straight to our first discussion."

His cloak flared out behind him as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page, "is self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

Anakin wasn't a great believer in softening his language.

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school five years now and realize that half of you have probably already been put into this situation. I'm never in a mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be."

He leaned back against his desk. "What I want to know is what would make you walk away. When do you decide that the risk isn't worth the cost?"

"Not for a Mord'Sith," Cara replied, her tone indicating it was a simple statement of fact. "Especially if they're only threatening your kneecaps."

"All right, then," he said, tone full of disbelief but unwilling to sustain the argument.

Then, because he couldn't help himself - "So you believe that whenever you can protect somebody by risking your own life, that would be the proper thing to do? Regardless of the potential consequences?"

"No." Cara's voice was even, almost patient. "It's not a question of what's proper, but what's necessary."

"Necessary, then," he modified impatiently. "You would say that sacrificing yourself to help others is always necessary? What if your survival could help to ensure more people's safety down the line?"

"Of course not, only someone utterly incompetent would be in a position where their death was necessary every time someone needed their help," Cara pointed out. "But I'm not afraid to do what's required of me."

"A Mord'Sith," Cara repeated, slowly, barely managing not to roll her eyes. "Which I am." In case there was any confusion.

"Really?" Cara debated pointing out she'd already had a conversation much like this one with the other Skywalker on the island, but the failing at seeming neutral made her want to see how far she could push. "The Mord'Sith are quite well known where I come from."

"The Sisters of the Agiel are a highly trained order," Cara explained, giving him a slightly different version to what everyone else got. "Dedicated to the service of the Lord Rahl."

Considering the House of Rahl went for names like Darken and Panis, Anakin probably shouldn't count the possibility out. "Ruler of D'Hara."

Though it was helpful if you actually took the throne, Richard.

"You could say that." Just because wouldn't be very accurate, didn't mean he couldn't say it. "Mord'Sith serve the Lord Rahl in whatever way is needed."

Anakin really didn't want to know some of the things 'whatever way' entailed.
