Ethics [Thursday, September 2, 2nd period]

Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance-as the door clicked shut behind him. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry. "You may address me either as Master Skywalker or Professor Skywalker. This is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are, if I don't recognize you already--and move straight to our first discussion."

His cloak flared out behind him as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page, "is self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

Anakin wasn't a great believer in softening his language.

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school five years now and realize that half of you have probably already been put into this situation. I'm never in a mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be."

He leaned back against his desk. "What I want to know is what would make you walk away. When do you decide that the risk isn't worth the cost?"

"It would have to be something damn important," James said.

Like protecting the royal family. Or the Kingdom.

"I would on behalf of my Prince or his family. To protect my kingdom. To save the few I value and respect."

Small list, that last.

"Then they are free to ask someone else. Not my concern." He shrugged.

Hearing an answer like that had Cassidy wanting to blurt out her feelings on something that seemed so coarse and uncaring, but she was pretty sure that picking a fight with a student would cause Professor Skywalker to frown mightily at her. And no member of a fan club wanted to be frowned at by the person they were fangirling, really. So instead she bit the inside of her cheek and stared really intently at the notes she was taking.

Very intently.

James glanced around the room to see if anyone wanted to comment on his answers. He did notice a look, a bit of pain and concentration, from a fellow student.

She was trying very hard to keep the flood of words that she wanted to give voice to only in her head. She couldn't understand how someone could say something like that about people he didn't know. She knew the question was about when you wouldn't sacrifice yourself for someone or something, but it seemed to Cassidy that it was especially cruel to just dismiss the lives of people that you may not know personally.

She was writing down all of these thoughts in her notebook as she fought with her inner nature.

Protocol, she kept thinking. Focus on your Protocol lessons and do not start a public incident in Professor Skywalker's class. Do not put your concern or irritation into words, Cassidy. Protocol.

She repeated this mentally over and over.

He quirked an eyebrow over at her, studying her briefly. He would linger after class for a moment or two, if she had something to say.
