Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance-as the door clicked shut behind him. "I'm Master Anakin Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry. "You may address me either as Master Skywalker or Professor Skywalker. This is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are, if I don't recognize you already--and move straight to our first discussion."

His cloak flared out behind him as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said, pointing to the top of the page, "is self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

Anakin wasn't a great believer in softening his language.

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school five years now and realize that half of you have probably already been put into this situation. I'm never in a mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be."

He leaned back against his desk. "What I want to know is what would make you walk away. When do you decide that the risk isn't worth the cost?"

Cassidy approached Anakin when she thought that he looked like he might have a moment to speak. She was nervous, because she never had done anything like this before, and she wasn't exactly sure she'd be any good at it.

"Pri--Professor Skywalker? Do you have a moment, sir?"

She really needed to quit thinking of him as a Warlord Prince.

"I do," he said. "Is there something I can help you with?"

She gave him a shy but respectful smile. "I have seen in other classes that the teachers ask for assistants to help them in class. Would you be need -- wanting one of those, sir? If so, I would like to volunteer myself for that position."

Cassidy, you probably didn't need to make the question sound so formal.

Anakin smiled. "That would be appreciated. I accept your offer."

She smiled happily, and still tried to be respectful. "Thank you, sir. Just let me know what you need me to do."

She was perhaps a bit excited.

"Mostly it will be handing out paperwork," Anakin said. "The classes are generally participation-based."

"Um...Professor Skywalker?" She was so not calling him Master.

"I might have...some ethic problem thing sort of situation. Well, not me, someone I know." If it's another me counts like someone I know?

She was confusing herself now.

"Someone else has an ethical problem that you want to talk to me about," Anakin rephrased. "Is this about Raven?"

Oh. "You...know?" Who else knew then? "And yes, so you see how it's about me- but not about me, and a lot about her." She was still confusing herself, but at least now she knew someone else had any idea of what she was babbling about.

"Oh, and the TA spot..." Well, she had been rejected once, so twice wouldn't hurt. She hoped.

Anakin arched up his eyebrows. "Not about you and a lot about her? So you've spent a great deal of time with Raven and feel qualified to understand how her mind works, then."

By now Zatanna knew when she had screwed up with someone. "Ack, I mean...it wasn't me, alright? It was other me and now I'm getting all the blame. So not fair..."

Anakin continued to stare at her. "Perhaps you can rephrase," he said, "in a way that the questions you're asking are about you and not Raven?"

Okay, okay, she totally could do that. "I want to know what, in your opinion, would be the best way to work this huge mess I am part of. What do I do to avoid the hate glares and have one simple and completely harmless talk with Raven? Oh, and also...how do I know the other me was wrong? What if her judgment call, my first impression of her are not entirely misguided?"

Those were a lot of questions.

"I met the other you," Anakin said, "and she was completely misguided." He leaned back against his desk. "I think the best way to go about it isn't, like you did initially with me, blame Raven for everything that has gone wrong. Getting defensive won't help fix anything. I spoke with Raven on Tuesday and she is working very hard on not judging you for something you may never do, but you will never have a completely harmless talk with her."

"I don't want to simply blame Raven, but it's so easy for you all to judge just like the other me did." She was probably a little too angry at the moment. "I only want us to settle our differences." If Anakin pretended to have Zatanna live four years being stared down, she would really end up doing something stupid.

Still, this whole conversation had been useful. "Thanks for listening to me, Professor Skywalker."

"I'm not judging you for what the other you did," Anakin said, beginning to lose patience. "I'm warning you against blaming the entire island for how one girl reacted to seeing you. And frankly, pushing on this falls right into the over-reacting split-second poor judgment I saw the other you demonstrating. Work on that. I'll see you next week."
