So You Say You Want a Revolution: Week 1, Period 3

Aly was enjoying being back in a classroom, perching on her desk and watching the students make their way into the class. She smiled at the students who had that shiny patina of being brand new to Fandom and nodded to Ino if she was there as a student she'd known before. Once everyone was close to seated, she stood up, leaning back against the desk.

"Good morning. I'm going to admit straight off that I might be a little rusty with this whole teaching thing. It's been a little while," she gave a little smirking smile that said you could take her seriously at your own risk. "I'm Alianne of Pirate's Swoop. You all can call me Aly, duani is acceptable if you're uncomfortable with just a nickname, but the first person who calls me Miss Aly gets me unhappy."

"This class is 'So You Say You Want a Revolution.' If you're not interested in revolutions, pretend because you already missed the class on Canada. During the term, we're going to talk about why formenting revolution can be a good thing. We're going to discuss what revolutions can be used for, how they can be put together, and why a failed revolution can be just as effective." She gazed at all of them with a slight smile. "And yeah, I hate theory so practicalities will be covered. Demolitions, weaponry, organisation, magic - or not, tactics." She grinned. "And my favourite, intelligence."

"Ten years ago, I helped organise a rebellion that put my Queen in power and have served as her Spymaster ever since - when I wasn't teaching here, of course. Almost everything I'm going to be teaching you is what I learned during the rebellion and in the years since. And if I didn't learn it there, it's something that was useful to me at the time." She paused for a moment before adding. "In spying, your brain is almost everything - half of spying is half mental which I've said many, many times before. A single person can't put together an effective revolution. But a single person can destroy one. And a destroyed rebellion feeds only the ravens and Stormwings. It's a dangerous game. And one you have to commit to fully if you're going to succeed."

"Today I'm going to be traditional - for once - and get to know all of you. I'd also like to hear what you think about revolutions and rebellions. When are they appropriate, what would it take to rebel against the current power structure of your home country, society, or even this school." She smiled mischievously. "I'm looking for a TA or two too so if you're interested, let me know."

Nico had a course on staging a revolution with his cousins. Best case scenario was that Percy would learn something despite himself. The worst was that Luke would and things would all go to Hades (though not really) in his timeline.

This was going to be a challenge. Nico hoped he was up for it.

Karla had her notebook out and ready, even though it was only the first day of class. But with things growing more dire in Glacia by the day, she didn't want to miss anything that could help her.

Cara frowned as she listened to the lecture, regardless of certain choices and actions she'd made, she was much more used to being on the side of putting down rebellions.

Percy didn't know if it was good luck or bad luck that he was in a class on staging revolutions with his two cousins. It meant he got to keep an eye on them but it also meant that they got to hear the same information he did.

Even with a short lecture, Percy found his mind wandering (as it often did) to instances of Luke learning too much, taking the knowledge back with him and destroying Camp Half Blood. He thinned his lips just imagining it. Again.

Percy tapped his pencil against his notebook and listened even if he wanted to watch both Luke and Nico to check their reactions. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad.

Maybe he'd learn something despite himself.

Ino's eyes were narrowed thoughtfully as she scribbled down a few things. She didn't know if this class would help in her particular situation, but she had had the idea that, in the basics that they were similar...

And so, here she was.

Luke didn't think it was all that odd he was in class with Percy and Nico, since there were only so many classes one could take in a school. But that didn't stop him from glancing in their direction anyway, since he was still a bit weirded out from having cousins here in the first place.

Finally, Makita understood why she and Proto were here. A lot of this was more his style than hers, admittedly, but Makita planned to memorize it all anyway.

Elphaba dutifully took her notes, but did not know what to think of this class, or the fact her father seemingly had signed her up for it. Revolution in Oz seemed such a peculiar and odd idea.

Yet another class that Cally would have chosen for herself if she could have, would never have seen on Auron, and had mixed feelings about not staying through to the end. This was getting to be a theme; her solution for the moment was to take as many notes as she could on her datapad, one of the few things from home that had arrived here with her.

Cloud liked the prospect of this class.

That said, he wasn't taking notes. It just wasn't his thing, but he was certainly paying attention.

Katniss had no idea how she'd ended up in this course -- and frankly, with the Capitol's eye possibly on her (even if she hadn't seen any evidence to support Snow's threat), she was terrified to remain here.

But she also knew that to drop the course would be suspicious, so she simply sat rigidly, trying to appear as neutral as possible.

Jason was so not happy to have a class with Percy, especially since he didn't exactly remember signing up for this one. He'd learned to just put up with the schedule he got though, and he wasn't going to leave class for anyone but himself. At least Luke and Nico were here too. He'd managed to get along with both of them so far, so it was possible he might not screw that up.

Rinoa was eagerly taking notes. And trying not to wriggle in her seat. It was undignified.

Aly's simple introduction had Nico thinking this was something he could do easily without giving anything away.

He waved at the class and faked a smile. "I'm Nico, a sophomore. Two things, huh? Um, I hung out in a casino for seventy years without aging and I hate cereal because my...dad's wife's mother is kind of crazy about it." There was no easy way to describe his relation to Demeter, sadly.

"My name is Karla, I'm a sophomore, and..." Karla tried to think of two random things about herself. "My pet frogs eat jello and I'm an only child."

Though she hadn't let that stop her from picking up an impressive array of Sisters.

"Cara. Junior." Cara debated what she could say that wouldn't be too revealing. "I don't cook, and I can take down a shadrin with a single arrow."

Re: Do the Introduction Dance [Rev 9-1]

[identity profile] seaweed-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Introductions didn't sound too hard. Percy would keep things brief and vague so he wouldn't reveal too much. Even if Luke had said no one cared about who he was, Percy wasn't comfortable with that.

"I'm Percy Jackson and I'm a sophomore." Just like his other cousin who was older than him. That would never stop being weird. Percy always failed to realize that Nico was always going to be older than him because of that whole casino thing.

He hadn't looked older and that was the important part.

"I've been expelled from every school I've been in so far," he said, just going with that one since it'd make him look more like some troubled teenager than anything else. "And I've been to Mount St Helen's."

Percy decided to just leave out that he'd pretty much blown up Mount St. Helen's and ended up nearly dead because of that. The more mundane the better.

"I'm Ino," she said, with a little wave. "Senior."

Which was really strange, okay?

Two random facts... uh... "I can't stand caramel, 'cept on ice cream, and English isn't my first language."

They were not the most thrilling facts in the world but, hey, they were the first things she thought of.

Re: Answer the Questions [Rev 9-1]

[identity profile] deaths-demigod.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"The question's complicated," Nico started, glancing around and wondering how his kin would take his answer. "In a revolt, don't both sides usually think they're right for whatever reason? So to me, it's more about how you know you really are right. Or if that automatically goes to the winner." Probably not useful to the discussion, but it was his opinion on the topic.

"What does duani mean exactly?" Ino asked curiously, approaching after class. "And hi! I figured it's best to ask before callin' someone something I don't know the full meaning of."

Also, she was interested in a TA position--but Ino tended to take a bit of time to lead into things.
