Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

"Been absolutely frigging adorable," Kate said with a laugh. Look, Bobby had called her awesome. People got far with her by calling her awesome. "I'm his fake big sister. Kate."

"I am so sorry," he apologized. "I know what it's like being stuck with him. Though it sounds like he's won you over if he's being 'frigging adorable' and those are words I would never use to describe my brother. Jack," he introduced himself.

Kate gave a dismissive little wave with her hand. "Oh, he's way easier than my last fake sib was." Plus way less intimidating. "He liked my welcome basket and everything, so we're totally cool."

"You got him a welcome basket? You really go all out with this fake sibling thing."

"Well I kinda made him a welcome basket, actually," she said. "Just a few basic items. Fake family is serious business, you know."

And someone may have needed a project to focus on after a crappy week.

"You'll never get rid of him now. You show him one act of kindness like that and he's attached for life."

"Well, I figure I can make him into my little minion and have him do my evil bidding." Kidding! Mostly. "I did promise him cookies, too."

"Good luck with the evil bidding. The kid's got his own opinions about everything, so you tell him to do something and he'll ask you so many questions about the hows and whys that you'll give up and dial rent-a-minion just to get the job done."

"Such little faith in my minion management skills," she chided lightly, with a smirk. "That could totally be my superpower."

"Anyone capable of managing Bobby without pulling their hair out has to have superpowers. But seriously, I appreciate you looking out for him. He's never been away from home for long, so there's going to be an adjustment period for him. What about you? Been away from home for long?"

"Well, technically I've been away from home two days." And what a fun trip that had been. "But, I've been living here for a little over a year now. I'm from Kansas, originally. Overland Park."

"You're practically a neighbor," Jack said approvingly. "A year's a long time. You must either like it here or your parents have it in for you.'

"Well, I moved here because I wanted to," she shrugged with a little smile, "and I've stayed because I've wanted to. It's not the easiest place to live, but the people are pretty awesome."

"That's good to know. There doesn't seem like much to do, but there wasn't in Hart either other than hanging out with friends. I'd go stir crazy if I didn't know anyone for long."

"Well, it's pretty easy to get to know people." She shrugged. "And also, this is kinda one of those towns that seem boring, but really aren't."

"So everyone keeps saying. I don't know whether the school pays you to talk up the place or everyone really likes it here."
