Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

Ah, now Jason knew which of his twins he was supposed to be. "Are you Jack?" he asked. It would explain the checking up on him and all, and to actually know someone's name in advance would be a nice change of events for once today.

"Of course I'm Jack, dumbass, who else would I be?"

"Hey, your brother is a lot of things, but a dumbass doesn't seem to be one of them," Jason said. "If you're really looking for Bobby, he was busy being dorky and overenthusiastic over there when I saw him last. I'm Jason Todd," he added oh so helpfully.

"No you're not."

Jason laughed. "Yes, I am. What, do you think I'm hazing you or whatever?"

"I think you look too much like my brother to not be related and I'm wondering what our mom's hidden from us. Or that you're really Bobby and something weird's happened and Mom's going to kill me. Either way, it ends up with an uncomfortable conversation with my mother and that's not something I'd like to get into today. You going to tell me what's going on here?"

"I did tell you. My name is Jason," he said. "What's going on here is that you're in a really effed up place now, and sometimes, weird things happen like two people running around looking like each other." Or three, but somehow, Jason thought it would be more entertaining for Jack to find out about Percy on his own. "I'm not hazing you and I'm not lying, and you can accept that or not, but if you choose not to, you're gonna have a really hard time here."

"Like it wasn't hard enough before this," he complained. He couldn't stop staring at Jason. "You look so much like him." He wasn't entirely convinced that this wasn't a prank, but he didn't think Bobby was up to something like this. "How old are you?"

"I know I look like him, I ran into him," Jason said. "I just turned fifteen. So, I guess maybe this is what you have to look forward to?"

"Maybe," Jack said, still cautious. "Where are you from?" Yes, Jason was now getting 20 questions as Jack tried to figure out if this was for real.

Compared to yelling and getting threatened, 20 Questions wasn't actually that bad. "I'm from a place called Gotham," he said. "It's a huge city. There's actually two or three other people here from there too. Where did you guys come from? I don't think I actually got that in all of Bobby's chatter."

"I'm surprised you could get anything out of Bobby. Hart, Missouri. It's pretty small. Nothing out of the ordinary. You're from the Gotham in New Jersey that Roy's from?"

"Uh, kind of?" Jason said. "I don't know if you're going to believe me."

"Let's assume I won't and you tell me anyway." The kid looked like Bobby. He was talking to him like Bobby. This probably wasn't going to change any time soon. Poor Jason.

Well, it was worth a shot, wasn't it? And maybe Jack would learn to believe if he heard enough of this stuff. "Okay. I'm from Gotham, and Roy's from Gotham, and my roommate Tim is from Gotham. But none of us are actually from the same place. It's a thing with different universes. When Tim and I go home, we're going to two different versions of Gotham."

"You're not helping to convince me that you're not Bobby with that sci-fi crap." Still, he looked more concerned than before, like he was starting to hear this random weird stuff too much and it was starting to sink in.

"He was convinced I was a future version of him who had come to save the world," Jason said. "And while it would be awesome to save the world, that's not how this works. He seems to believe in it all though."

"He would. He's a space cadet." Jack hesitated. "Is there another one of me around?"

"I haven't seen any other guys around who look like you, so I think you're safe," Jason said. "Also? I meant what I said earlier about this place lacking in a social hierarchy. You'll see what it's like as you start to make friends."

"That might be even weirder than you looking like my brother. No jocks, cheerleaders, theater kids, stoners, that kind of thing?"

"Oh, sure, there's different circles of people depending on what you're into, but there's not one group that's like, revered above all others," Jason said. "I don't know, maybe there's just not enough of us. It seems like most people get along all right."

Jack tried to process the downfall of everything he knew as fact. "There are so many things wrong with that." Not that it was a bad thing, everyone getting along, it was just unnatural. "How can you say all this with a straight face and not find it weird?"

"Because I've been here all summer?" Jason offered. And because this was the first time he'd been in school in a few years, but he wasn't going to add that part. There was no reason to make Jack think he was stupid or anything.

"You are way too well-adjusted." Jack shook his head at Jason. Looking at the kid with Bobby's face but who was completely different was too much to completely deal with today. "Did you get stuck in summer school?"

"Yeah, I basically got shipped here for the summer, and sent back for the school year," Jason said. "But I ended up liking the place a lot more than I expected, so I can't complain too much about being back."
