Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She was green. Bobby wasn't sure he could stop himself from staring, and it must suck to have all sorts of people staring at her and none of them talking. So he marched over and stuck out his hand. "Hi! I'm Bobby McCallister!"

Elphaba raised an eyebrow and wondered if some of the other kids were daring people to come up to her. She decided to take him at face value and shook his hand. "Elphaba Thropp," she said. "That's an unusual name, Bobby."

"Not as unusual as Elphaba," he pointed out, pronouncing it carefully but giving her a little smile. "I've never met anyone with your name before. It's pretty!"

Elphaba had to smile a little. It was funny, how to her 'Bobby' was unusual, but her's was commonplace, and to Bobby is was quite the opposite. "Thank you," she said. "It's very kind of you to say."

She wasn't used to taking compliments. "Bobby is very... bouncy sounding?"

"My real name's Robert," he explained. "But everyone calls me 'Bobby.' I think my big brother would agree with you that it's bouncy. He says I'm too enthusiastic!"

Obviously Jack's criticisms hadn't actually had any effect.

"Enthusiasm can be a good thing," Elphaba said. "But too much and you can come across as... empty-headed." She wasn't harsh in her tone, just reflecting.

Bobby considered that and shrugged. "Maybe. But it seems like the cool people usually are empty-headed. The cheerleaders at least. So are you new too? Where are you from?"

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I am," Elphaba said. She didn't think that anyone should be empty-headed. Especially those who were cold-hearted. "Where I am from, though, is Munchkinland, part of Oz-that-is-not-Australia."

She was getting a little tired of that disclaimer, so those last four words rolled out of her mouth with a tired tone.

"It's one of those other worlds then, right?" he checked. "Like, um, Gaia? And the Midlands?" Someone was trying to remember his new classmates' geography. "Why did you come here to go to school?"

"Magic," Elphaba said. "My father called in a favor from the good witch of the South."

Okay, he didn't think she was kidding. It must be like Cara and... Bobby decided to accept the weirdness. "I just flew on a plane. Your way sounds more fun."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Flying would have been far more fun," Elphaba said, now understanding Jack's comments about his brother. "By magic it was all over in a blink of an eye, leaving somewhere unfamiliar and alone."

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
"But you're not alone now, right?" Bobby asked. "I mean - I'll be your friend. Um, if you want."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Elphaba gave him a little smile. "I suppose I could want that," she said. "Your brother wasn't kidding when he said you had boundless enthusiasm."

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Bobby rubbed his hand through his hair sheepishly. "I just like people, you know? But now that we're friends, you can mock me about it if you have to."

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
"It's a good quality," Elphaba said, her expression serious. "I wasn't mocking you. I just think that it might not be a good idea to make friends with everyone so fast."

You never knew what people were really like, not on first meeting.

"Most people are nice if you're nice to them," Bobby pointed out

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I wish that were true," Elphaba said. "Some people don't give you the chance."

Re: More General Mingling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"No," he agreed. "I guess not. But sometimes it's worth it, you know? I'd rather the one person not be nice than lose someone as a friend cause I'm not."

Re: More General Mingling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
"That wasn't exactly what I meant," Elphaba said, looking away. She also didn't like the fact that the boy was probably right. "But you're right, being nice to others is rarely the wrong choice."

Re: More General Mingling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Bobby smiled at her. "What did you mean?"

Re: More General Mingling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] didntchewgrass.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
"It doesn't matter," Elphaba said, not really wishing to get into it. "But I do hope no one ever takes advantage of your trust, Bobby."

Re: More General Mingling [Fall 2010]

[identity profile] notlikejack.livejournal.com 2010-08-29 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Thanks, Elphaba," Bobby replied, giving her a little smile. "And - if you want to talk about it some day, I'm here, okay?"
