Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

That girl over there was GREEN. Like, REALLY green. Just because Kurt happened to look normal today didn't mean that he didn't know what it felt like to be freakish-looking. He headed over to see if she needed brotherhood or cheering up or something like that.

"So... hi!" He waved at Elphaba awkwardly. "I'm Kurt! Are you... adjusting to Fandom okay?"

"I don't know if I'm adjusting quite yet," Elphaba said. "I think I'm still in shock over most things." This boy also got her gratitude for treating her normal.

"There's a LOT around here to be shocked by," Kurt told her with a friendly nod. "More or less, depending on what kind of world you come from. And sometimes, the things you're worried that people will freak about, they don't."

Elphaba arched an eyebrow at Kurt. "Is this your way of trying to comment on my skin without seeming rude?" she asked, but her tone was soft.

Kurt shrugged sheepishly. "Um... Sort of? I just wanted you to know that people here won't give you any trouble because of it, even if they did back where you came from. Trust me, I know from experience." He gave her a reassuring smile.

Elphaba was still wary, her eyebrow remained arched. "I can plainly see how," she said, when she really couldn't. It seemed odd for the boy to say such a thing when he looked so normal.

"No, you can't, because I'm in disguise!" Kurt told her. "I figure, why surprise the new kids more than necessary, ja? I am normally blue and fuzzy."

He snaked his tail out from under his shirt and waved it at her.

Elphaba didn't gasp, but her eyes widened at the sight of the tail.

"So you can magically hide your appearance?" Elphaba said, actually rather jealous of that fact. "You are very lucky."

"I am VERY lucky," Kurt agreed. "I didn't get the image inducer until a few years ago." He tapped a finger on his watch. "It's not magic, it's science. Sort of the same thing, but different."

"And yet you still need to wear it here," Elphaba said, getting implications from that fact. "Even if people aren't to give you trouble for being blue."

Kurt scuffed a toe in the ground and looked sheepish. "Yeah, I... Um. It took me a long time before I stopped wearing it. Because of the way I'd been treated back home. I... put it back on today because of the new people. Um. You know?"

"I know," Elphaba said. "I understand exactly why you would want to look like this and not blue and fuzzy."

It was an odd moment to share with a stranger, but it was true.

"Thank you," Elphaba said. Though there was still more than a tinge of jealousy in her heart. "I am glad you have a way to conquer it, though."
