Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees. That meant there wasn't as much shade either, so these tables had more fans on them to make up for the difference. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

[Please wait for OCD! The OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Really?" Jack said, amused. "The girls tell you that one? Are you new too?"

Roy couldn't actually remember who told him that, because that whole day had been one big 'buh-wha?' combined nastily with 'I could really use a hit.' "Possibly," he admitted, "but I worked hard for these shoulders. Might as well show 'em off. Besides." He shrugged. "The ladies love it." He offered one callused hand, completely not bothered at the moment whether Jack or anyone else noticed the track marks or not. "Roy Harper. And no, I'm not new, I've been here since January."

Jack shook the guy's hand with a firm grip. "Jack McCallister. New guy," he admitted. "Can't really argue with what the ladies want. Got any insider tips about the school? Who's who, who to avoid, that kind of thing?"

"Watch out for Emma Frost," Roy said immediately. "She can read your mind, which she won't tell you until she decides you've thought something that offends her, and she's kind of crazy to boot." He paused, then added "Oh, yeah, we have people with superpowers and things here, so if that's weird to you, surprise."

"Superpowers, right," Jack said, thinking Roy was joking. "I'll remember Emma. Sounds like a lot of girls I know." Except for the mind reading being literal.

He'd learn. "So, where are you from, Jack?" Roy asked. "And do they have a Gotham City there?"

[identity profile] notlikebobby.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hart, Missouri. Never heard of Gotham City, but Missouri's full of small towns pretending to be cities, so it's possible." He misunderstood what was meant by 'there'. "Where are you from?"

And that answered that question, though not in the way Jack intended. "Gotham's in New Jersey, actually," Roy said. "Most recently, I'm from Star City, California."

"Haven't heard of either of those places," he said apologetically. "But California, that's pretty cool. Long way to go for school."

"Yeah, well," Roy said, shrugging. "So is Missouri."

"Not my first choice," he admitted. "My little brother Bobby's an overachiever. The school offered him a place, he wanted to go, but there wasn't a chance in hell our mom would let that happen unless I came too. Sucks transferring, but I agreed to it."

Jack shrugged and smiled. "Can't trust the kid on his own. He doesn't come with an off switch or a sense of self-preservation. You got any brothers?"

Roy knew a lot of people like that! "He'll fit right in here," he assured Jack, which probably wasn't that reassuring to, like, a normal person. "And, no, I'm an only child." Also, an orphan twice over. Also also, disowned.

"Yeah," Roy said, nodding confirmation. "Actually, some of the rooms are co-ed, but I got stuck with a guy. He's not that bad--well, kind of a dick, but. A girl would've been cool, y'know?"

Jack shook his head. "Talk about a progressive school. But hey, at least you don't have to deal with hair products and them insisting you have to leave the room every time they want to change." He grinned. "I could see the benefits though. I've got a guy too. Andy. You know him?"

"No, I don't think so," Roy admitted. He'd spent a lot of time he could've spent meeting people being eaten up by his own drama, though. "Wait. I think he's on the radio thing. Watch out for the radio thing," he warned.

"Well, that depends on what you mean by 'good,'" Roy said. "There aren't really any sports, bu t there's cheerleading, and, like, a lot of independent and organized fighting practice. And there's no drinking age, if you're into that."

"Not huge, but I won't turn it down," Jack acknowledged. "No sports? It's a high school." Brain did not compute.
