It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

"Who's Bobby?" Andy asked, spotting the boy's nametag as he wandered over.

Jack glanced over, then turned to see who this guy was. "My brother. We had to share a room at home. Are you Andy by any chance or know him?"

"That's me," Andy said, gesturing down at his nametag. "Welcome to Fandom."

"Thanks. Jack McCallister. Sorry if you didn't ask for a roommate, but it looks like we're stuck with each other," he explained lightly.

"That's okay. I'm kinda used to it. My last roommate was named Jack too, so even that's the same."

"Another Jack. We're everywhere. Anything I should know about being your roommate? Pets, weird habits, sock on the door rule?"

"I'm pretty easy going," Andy said. "Though I do... uh... well I have a bong. And I use it as intended."

"That's cool," Jack shrugged. He wasn't entirely comfortable, but it wasn't like he hadn't been around stoners before. It was his mom's pot problem he took issue with. "It's not my thing, but as long as the room doesn't smell all the time and you don't expect me to join in, then we're cool."

"I air it out if it gets stinky," Andy promised. "Oh, and one other thing." If you ignored the whole getting people to do things he wanted just by asking thing, at least. "I've got a friend, who stops by occasionally. Gus. He's a gremlin."

"Is that slang for something? I'm from Missouri, so we're a little behind the times." 5 years behind the times really.

"No, it's a species. They're about yay high," Andy said, demonstrating with a hand, "green, scaly and have a venomous bite that kinda makes people hallucinate. But don't worry -- Gus won't bite anyone I ask him not to."

"Don't take this the wrong way, because I mean this as a genuine question. Are you high right now?"

Andy chuckled. "No, really. Fandom isn't like other islands. Or schools."

"In a good way or a bad way?"

"I think it's good. It's... well there's a lot of things that are hard to believe until you see them for yourself."

"That's high school for you," Jack replied. He had no idea what he was getting himself into. "What about the sock on the door deal? Is there a girlfriend who'll be stopping by? Doesn't hurt to know."

"I've got a girlfriend, yeah," Andy said, with a shy but obviously delighted smile. "Her name is Raven. But we haven't- well there hasn't been any need for socks on the door. Yet. The same goes for you. Just let me know and I can make myself scarce for a while."

Jack gave a slightly embarrassed chuckle. "I don't think that's going to happen any time soon, but thanks. I'll let you know. Maybe after I've met more than 2 people here."

"It can be a little overwhelming at first," Andy commiserated. "But it really is a really cool place."

"Yeah," Jack waved it off. "It'll be fine. New school, that's all. A couple of days and everything will be good."
