It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

Momoko had been happy to learn she was getting a new roommate, even though she was not very happy about changing rooms and floors. But maybe, she thought as she scanned the list to see what she had been assigned, just maybe it would be a fun adventure for her last year here.

"Spock?" Not Speck, which was what she'd told Tim, earlier. Whoops. "Hmm. I wonder if he's already in the room? I hope he's not allergic to cats!"

Or the colour pink.

Spock was, indeed, not allergic to cats. Or the color pink. Though he might find it annoying, he would hardly admit to that, because: Vulcan. He strode up to Momoko and said, matter-of-factly, "You are Akatsutsumi Momoko, are you not? I am Spock. We are now roommates."

"Wah! You said my name right!" Momoko beamed at him and held out her hand to shake. He seemed really nice!

"Hi! You can just call me Momoko! It's nice to meet you! I'm from Tokyo City Japan and I'm a senior this year! Sorry if it's rude, but may I ask, are you an elf? Your ears look a little like my friend's and she is. Do you know her: Leda?"

Spock kept his hands folded in front of him as he said, "No, I am not an elf." Why did people keep asking him that? It was very annoying. "I am a Vulcan. I have, indeed, met Leda. Once, I believe."

"So if you're a vulcan, does that mean you're from Vulca? Is that a city or another world?" Momoko nodded and kept her hand extended a bit longer. Maybe he hadn't seen it?

"Do you like cats? I have one, he's really nice but a bit curious. He listens well, too, so you don't have to worry about your things. You don't have a dog, do you?"

He'd seen it. He just didn't shake hands, and wasn't good about explaining that. "Vulcan is a planet in the star system known to Terrans in this time period as 40 Eridani A," he explained. "My previous roommate had a cat, which I found to be perfectly acceptable as long as it was not chewing on my shoes."

"AWESOME" Momoko pulled her hand back and smiled. "Oh, who was your old roommate? Did something happen? Moshi doesn't chew on shoes; he may sleep on your head, if he likes you!"

"Elena," Spock said. "She graduated." He was not looking forward to a cat sleeping on his head.

"Ah! Elena?!" Momoko gasped and bounced forward at him. "Then, Rookie! I know Elena! She was in classes with me and in Gun club! She was your roommate? What a coincidence!"

"Not particularly," Spock said. "It is a small school; it is unsurprising that two people in need of roommates would have an acquaintance in common. Indeed, it is more unusual that we were not previously acquainted."

Just a moment, please, as the words trickle through and try to find matching definitions.

"Oh! You mean, it's weird that we aren't already friends because there aren't that many people here at Fandom? I totally agree. I mean, maybe we've been in a class together, but I totally don't really remember."

Spock didn't find it all that weird that they weren't friends already, as Spock wasn't friends with many people. Human teenagers were strange and emotional. "I am not certain," Spock admitted. He had a good memory, but it wasn't photographic. "It's possible. I have been here for over a year now."

"I've been here for two! This will be my third year!" Momoko was half excited about it and half not.

"But that's okay, we'll totally be friends now that we're roommates! Oh! I still have some packing to do, and I have to check up on someone after the picnic, so how late can I move in?"

"Indeed," Spock said, "we will be roommates now." He was reserving judgment on the 'friends' thing. "It makes little difference to me; if I can assist you in moving I would be perfectly amenable to doing so."

I'm sorry to hear you're amenable, but don't worry!" She had no idea what amenable meant. "I do have a bookcase and lots of other stuff that I need to move, but I was going to ask my friends to help."

Spock had figured that out, yes. "I meant I would be open to assisting," he said.

"Oh!" Momoko meeped. "Sorry! I thought you meant you couldn't help. But I do think I can manage everything. I just don't want to bother you when I'm moving my stuff in! If I do, you totally have to tell me, okay?"
