It might have been the start of the fall semester, but it was definitely still summer in Fandom. The sun was shining and the temperature was already starting to get high, even as the NPC crew set things up for the day.

Luckily, the school knew how to take care of folks on days like today. Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with cold drinks and food, and an entire section devoted to offering up different ~~moddable~~ ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

With everything set up and the crew out of the way, it was time for the picnic to begin!

"It's magic and support," Tara explained, returning a smile. "We ... pretty much we get together to hang out and work on our skills, so we're covered if anything happens at school." A beat.

"N-not that it does. That often. Do you do magic?"

Zatanna nodded. So it was like a group thing for magic people that wanted to talk about...magic! She already loved the idea; why hadn't she thought of that before? "Ah, that sounds pretty amazing! Not the part when something happens at the school, but still, sort of makes everyone more comfortable, I'd guess." It would sure make her feel more comfortable.

"And I do. Well, I'm still training and everything, but yes, magic. And then the other kind of magic", said as she showed her deck of cards. "My dad had this wonderful idea of covering her magic abilities by acting as a stage magician. You know, hiding in plain sight?"

"Seriously?" Tara looked impressed. "That's really cool. So if he did anything, it looked like ... just part of the show?"

"Yep", said as she nodded. "People never imagined he was actually making rabbits come out of empty hats, or make me disappear inside of a cage- although, you know, he was just sending me somehwere else." No need to scare the other girl. "Although there is also the stage magic that everyone loves", added as she messed with her deck.

"Ah, I'm Zatanna. Zatanna Zatara; I know, fancy name. Nice to meet you." She even extended her hand and everything.

"Tara Maclay," Tara returned, shaking the hand. "Not a fancy name."

"I learned magic from a parent too," she added. "My mom was a really strong witch. J-just around the house, though. She didn't do it on stage."

That made Zatanna smirk. "If I ever turn into a stage magician I won't need to come up with a fake name, at least. For any other case, I'm just hoping I don't get weird looks."

"Ah, so you are a witch too!" It made sense, since she was sitting there and everything. "That's my dad's quirk, always wanted to protect and entertain. And he looked awesome in a tuxedo." The past tense -her's and Tara's- went unnoticed, the girl too caught up talking about her father to notice.

"So, lots of magic people in Fandom?"

Tara would have been startled if the past tense had been pointed out to her; her mother was still alive. She was just so far away, and she rarely got home, and ...

Anyhow. "A fair number," Tara answered. "Some of them are amazing. Karla's from a whole world where everybody can do magic, so she's like a thousand years ahead of me. And Raven's really good, too. I'm still learning."

And if they were having that conversation, Zatanna would've been right back at Tara, with the difference that she just couldn't find her father. Curses sucked that way.

But the current one was interesting enough. "...Woah, everybody? That sounds amazing." It truly was, and it meant she had so much to learn about. "Well, I don't have much time doing magic neither, so I'll join you on the less experienced side of the magic users." She still thought her magic was pretty good, but at the same time, if you were surrounded by lots of people that did magic... "So you guys gather from time to time eh? Do I need to sign up somewhere?"

"We have a sign-up sheet here," Tara said proudly, pushing it forward. "We meet Wednesdays after classes, usually outside. You should come."

Zatanna took the sheet. "Awesome", said as she made a little wave of her hand. "neP raeppa", muttered as the pen she had stored on her luggage appeared in a small cloud of light, right on her hand. "I will be sure to come around", mentioned as she started to fill the details.
