Tara looks more nervous than excited as students take their seats, but tries hard to school her face into a confident mask.

"Okay, first off - you've probably heard about the assignment. From the radio, if nothing else. I promise you, it's not anywhere near as bad as you're imagining. I won't keep people in suspense - we'll do the debate last, because I suspect no-one will be able to focus until this is out of the way.

Before I explain that, however, I need to make two announcements.

"First, Teacher's Assistants have been chosen. I have a carrot - Major K! - and a stick - Angelus. If you're having trouble grasping a concept, talk to Major K!. He'll guide you through the thinking. If you think you've got a hold on it, talk to Angelus. He'll challenge your thinking, give you the opportunity to clarify your position.

"Second, and related to the latter - this class is not an easy A. At some point in this course you will find yourself challenged and confronted. For many of you, that will be today. If you walk out of this classroom before class is over, and without checking it with me, I may be understandably upset. However, I recognise that if you get angry or upset, you may need some time alone, or away from the group. To that end, I present to you the ~~Emo Closet~~ Time Out Room." She walks to the back of the classroom and opens the door to what previously was a supply cabinet. Inside is what looks very much like a white padded room. "This room is soundproofed. You can cry, scream and punch things all you want, and I will not penalise you for leaving the class or the discussion. Major K! or I will come to check on anyone who goes to the Emo Closet Time Out Room, in case you need help or support. Feel free to tell us to leave you alone.

"Now on to the assignment. Yes, it's a Master/slave exercise. Please don't jump to conclusions about that. There is a difference between slavery and abuse, although the two do often go hand in hand. The rules for this assignment prevent any form of abuse - both Master and slave must have a safeword so that they can stop things at any time. What we're exploring here is slavery. That's all, and that's quite enough. Please, please try not to confuse it with other ethical issues, even the ones that often attend this one.

"The TAs will be handing out to you a copy of the rules, and the guidelines for your role, as well as a badge that will either declare 'I am an Ethics Class slave' or 'I am an Ethics Class Master'. These badges must be worn when you are in your role. If you're not in your role, life continues on as normal. As a further distinction, I urge all of you to adopt another name or title for the role you are playing. To that end, you may call me 'My Lady', Angelus 'Daddy' and Major K! 'Rabbit'."

Jonathan, Kitty, Chiana, Angela, Six, Allie, Lindsay, Shane and Veronica are given Master rules by 'Daddy'
Sydney, Stark, Rory, Archie, Hotaru, John Connor, Paige, Chloe and John Sheppard are given slave rules by 'Rabbit'.

Allie looks up.

"Yeah, you must be John."

"Yeah. I'm John." I also answer to redundant and Mr. Obvious.

"So. Terms. We should discuss."

"Yeah, um... I guess I'm responsible for your well being this week. Or, at least, for 16 hours of this week. Um... is there anything you're absolutely opposed to?"

"I'm not comfortable with this whole thing. I understand trust issues, and I've been in squads before, but this... is a bit much."

"Absolutely opposed to? Anything permanent. I just want to get this over."

John stratches his shoulder.

"I don't think I blame you. I'm not sure I'm comfortable being completely responsible for another person or telling them what to do," she admits.

"It's a burden. I've done it. Sorta. Military. Making sure your squad's safe, obeying orders. For a goal, though. Take that hill, guard this post. Not for some asinine assignment."

Allie's eyes widen. "You were in the military?" she asks. "Wow."

She's not sure how she's going to pull off telling this boy what to do.

"So do you have any ideas on how to make this work?"

[ooc: in case you haven't noticed, allie is not an assertive person]

"I have no clue. If you want this done like a military exercise, I'm good with that. This whole thing just reeks."

John, you're supposed to be the 'slave' not 'the power behind the throne'. Waitaminute. That sounds much better than running around in I Dream Of Jeanie harem pants.

[heh. John swings both ways? oh, that sounds so wrong. Also, I'm not familiar with your fandom. Caught one ep of House, with the doping baseball guy.]

"That works for me. Um, so, your first assignment as my slave it to tell me how this would work as a military exercise," she says, biting her lip.

[ooc: its okay - i'm playing her a little different from canon - basically how i would have imagined the character in high school - very shy & naive]

"Right. Sir."

"Sir, first you would give an objective. Object obtained, item protected, person sought."

"Second would be parameters. Stealth vs quickness. Size of forces utilized. Weaponry. Tactics. Specific or general as necessary."

"Third would be endgame. Does this mission have a definite end or ongoing action? Capturing the flag is a definite end whereas occupying a fortified structure has ongoing action."

"We also need to discuss and agree with the parameters and goals of the assignment."

[ooc: Ah, okay. Go easy on me ~~cuz john's never been around domineering women at all. ever.~~]

Allie blushes at his use of the title Sir but supposes it fits the parameters of the assignment.

"Okay, well, I'll have to figure out an objective and get back to you on that. Any suggestions?"

She reviews the rules list.

"As for parameters, well, I wouldn't ask you to do anything that would be potentially harmful. And, it says that we're supposed to come up with different names to use, so I guess you can call me Sir, though I think it's kind of weird. What do you want me to call you?"

"I honestly can't think of any. This whole thing is wierding me out. And as for your name for me, I don't really have any objections, I guess."

"I think that Private is the lowest rank in the military, right?" she says. "So, if we're going with the military theme, then we'll go with that."

"That works. Anything else? Safe word? Boundaries you won't cross?"

"Um, you pick the safe word. And as for boundaries, well, definitely nothing physical. You?"

"Celery. Nothing physical, and nothing permanent. I dont' want to end up all twitchy because of this."

"All right. I'll figure out an objective and get in touch with you, okay?"
