Jonothon had been... a little lax on his library duties over the summer, he realized. He'd missed a couple of shifts here and there (the fact that Silent Hill was a factor in this meant little to him, no), and today he was looking to make up for lost time with a bit of a vengeance. By noon, he'd managed to shelve the books on the cart, and as the day pressed on, he was going to even pull out a rag and start dusting things.

Because he could, damn it. It didn't matter that it was technically break week, now. He had a bloody job to do.

Ah, productivity.

//I'm a well-kept secret,// Jonothon retorted, waving some book or other about emotional blackmail in Rosalind's direction. //They only let me out when it's a beautiful day.//

And now he was going to have fun with this. So help them all.

"I see," she said, in the tones of the highly dubious. "They let you out in order to do Jono's job? And where is Jono?"

Yeah, she didn't believe this for a second. But--well.

He could keep this up for just about forever, Rosalind. Maybe he'd even explain what the hell he was doing if you smacked him upside the head for this.

She raised her eyebrows at him.

"And yet," Rosalind noted, "he is normally here on Sundays."

Funny that.

//Yes, well, Jonothon moves in mysterious ways,// he decided. It explained so much, really. //It's all to do with... elevation, and vertigo. That sort of thing.//

Pardon him for just one moment, Rosalind. He was vanishing briefly in order to put this book onto the shelf where it belonged.

Elevation and vertigo?

She waited, amused despite herself. "Do you mean to tell me," Rosalind said, "that he can fly?"

//Only if he buys a plane ticket,// Jono replied, breaking the groove, sadly. //The day you see otherwise will be the day the unforgettable fire has gone out of control.//

Ah, there was the groove, right back again.

He was only slightly short of a grin as he peered back out again. Grinning was easier, alas, with a mouth.

"You're insane," she told him, almost lightly. "And I wonder at why."

//I'm in a better mood than usual today,// came the reply, and now Jono was actually stepping out from the stacks, shoving his hands into his pockets and relenting. As awesome as being Bono would be, he wasn't Irish enough. And 'Bonothon' would be a very silly name. //Honestly, I think I'm just enjoying it before the other shoe drops. It always does, doesn't it?//

See, this was more like Jonothon. Paranoid.

It was paranoid and yet sounded utterly reasonable to her. She might've been more inclined to see things positively than most Turks (or all of them, really) but she was still--a Turk.

"It does," she agreed. "I assume Bono has packed and gone back to his cage?"

Mock the silly man, Rosalind. Mock him.

//Or else he's back on tour with th'rest of his band,// Jono agreed, shrugging lightly. //That's a better place for him, really. U2 would be lost without him.//

"U2?" Rosalind arched her eyebrows. "And you couldn't even be original?"

Tsk tsk.

//Well, I have to admit, I did run through the options I had available to me at th'time, but I didn't exactly want to call myself 'Mono,' considering my horrible luck with snogging as it is, and anything else that rhymed was just a bunch of gibberish.//

So there. He could be completely unoriginal however he saw fit.

//U2 is a band, luv.//

She just gave him a look like he was speaking gibberish to her.

(He was.)

"Why am I not surprised?" A bit put out that she couldn't have guessed--but it wasn't like Gaia had Earth music. "Any particular reason you're in a good mood?"

//My girlfriend stopped being a cat, I'm not trapped in some nightmare world where small children spontaneously light on fire, classes are finished for at least a week and that means I have more spare time to look after th'shop instead of juggling my schedule around school. I could keep fishing for reasons, I suppose. I suppose all of it can just boil down to, I've felt like absolute shite for well over a month now, sod it, I'm going to have at least one good day.//

So there, life. Take that.

"And so you spend it actually working," she said, and Shiva help her she was actually smiling slightly. "Are you trying to end the world?"

//I'm making up for lost time,// Jono decided with a shrug. //I've missed too much work already because of this bloody summer, you know.//

Being trapped in a living hell was apparently not excuse enough for a slacker to keep slacking. Go figure, this was the way Jono's brain worked.

"I'll refrain from reminding you of the times I've come in and you've been slacking off."

Except she just did.

//I caught up in my work on those days,// Jonothon protested, lightly. //During th'lunch break that I never take.//

So, really, all those mornings with his feet on the desk? Early lunches. All of them.

"You'll have to forgive my scepticism," Rosalind replied. "As this is one of the few times I've seen it for myself."

//You don't suppose Mr. DeTamble wouldn't have chased me out ages ago if all I did was lounge about with my feet up?// Jono quirked an eyebrow. //Really, it's difficult to be hugely productive too early in th'day. I stand by that.//

Look, some people couldn't just grab a mug of coffee on the way to work, okay?

"I do believe it's called 'getting enough sleep'," she mused. "In order to be effective in the morning."

//Easier said than done,// countered Jonothon. //When yer subconscious is hell-bent on making you regret the attempt.//

"It's the rare and unusual art of discipline," Rosalind snarked. "Do look it up sometime."

Jonothon eyed her for a moment at that statement, and then he was crossing his arms over his chest, clearly unimpressed.

//Yes, please, do tell me all about breathing exercises and moderating my diet in order to help me maintain a positive outlook on my life and to fend off nightmares that are just as much fears as they are memories, gel.//
