301--Friendship

All righty, gang. Sit down and shut up. This week we're working on friendship and communication. Notice how this just keeps building upon itself.

Now you might think that family would be more important in communcation, but it really isn't. Friends are chosen. Therefore the communication used with them is more carefully chosen. The things you talk about, the ways you show to one another that each is important to the other [she turns to the board and writes RECIPROCITY] The ways in which there is reciprocal respect and action. It's amazing what we say when and to whom. Have you ever told a complete stranger somethign you would only tell a close friend after a long passage of time? It's the human condition to do that. Let's talk, we'll ease in. Intimacy, trust, and platonic friendships. Whatcha think?

"I know. I was kind of thinking the same thing," Allie says. She blushes slightly. "I have a boyfriend, too, and between spending time with him and keeping up with everything else, well, I think I might have to quit the clinic."

She looks sad.

"I hate to do it, but it's not like we're in med school or anything yet."

Lily blushes too and says, "Yeah, I didn't have the boyfriend when I signed up to work there, and now part of my brain is telling me that I'm not allowed to quit just because I want to be with a guy."

She pauses. "But that's certainly not the only reason - You... you know I'm a witch right? The sort of medicine I'm used to doesn't come in the form of little pills. I'm not even sure I'm doing much good there, to be honest."

Allie looks a little surprised. "I don't think I did know that, though I knew there were witches and other, magical type people on campus."

She nods.

"I understand what you mean about not quitting because of a boy, but, I didn't really factor in social stuff when I took the job. I'm in Science Club, too. Plus I just signed up for Ethics, which is a tough class."

"I've heard Ethics is rough!" she says, with a sympathetic smile.

"And I'm supposed to be in Wildcrafting Club, but I've had to skip out on the past three meetings due to conflicts. And then this peer mediator thing came along, and this really seems like it's more my scene anyway, you know?"

"That's what I was thinking too. I mean, I want to be a doctor because I want to help people. And I just think that, right now, I can do more good by being a peer mediator than by working in the clinic."

"Exactly - me too." She sighs. "Well, it seems as if my decision is made. I'm not looking forward to going in to tell them, though."

Allie hadn't even considered that part of it. She doesn't think she has the guts to look Dr. House in the eye because OMG she would get lost in them and tell him she's quitting.

"Isn't it more professional to send a letter of resignation?" she asks.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___lily_evans_/ 2005-10-24 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh is it?" She shrugs. "At my last school, we did pretty much everything through face-to-face meetings with the faculty and staff... A letter would certainly make things easier, though I'll obsess for days over wording it 'just so.'"

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I think it would be easier to agonize over just-so ahead of time than have to think on my feet," Allie says.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___lily_evans_/ 2005-10-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Conversely, a letter will exist much longer than the memory of a meeting... here anyway. Have you made up your mind completely? When do you think you'll turn yours in?"

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not one hundred percent, but about 95% sure. And probably as soon as I decide for certain. What about you?"

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___lily_evans_/ 2005-10-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"If I'm going to do it, probably the sooner the better - to give them more time to find a replacement. Didn't I just hear something about Lisa quitting also? I would hate to leave them in a lurch."

[identity profile] allie-cameron.livejournal.com 2005-10-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I think Lisa did quit. But at least there's that new doctor."

She smiles.

"I need to go, but it was good talking to you. I'm sure I'll see you at peer mediator stuff."

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___lily_evans_/ 2005-10-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I'm looking forward to it."
