Competitive Cooking - Wednesday, Period 3 [7/21]

When Piper arrived, she placed a container on the table in front of the classroom. "Morning everyone. I brought brownies. Feel free to take one." She made them herself, of course.

"Today, the ingredient you're going to work with is cheese. That's a pretty easy one. You can make so much with it." She then went into a short lecture about what can be made with cheese, many of the recipes being Italian dishes. "Okay, so try to pair up with someone you haven't worked with, yet. As always, I'm here if you have any questions."

Peter instantly went to make the old classic, grilled cheese sandwiches. "Anyone is free to come help me," he said. "This is something I definitely can handle."

"You aren't planning on setting anything on fire?" Rilla asked rather anxiously.

Last week's work with Dandelion had worried her.

"I'm pretty sure burnt cheese sandwiches aren't going to win us any points," Peter said. "So planning, no. And as long as we pay attention we shouldn't end up with anything resembling open flame. Unless this is some very scary cheese."

"How can we tell if it is going to be particularly frightening?" Rilla inquired. "Last week my partner wanted to set our applesauce afire."

[identity profile] theotherpeter.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Can you even do that?" Peter wondered out loud, but figured it could be done if you had enough alcohol in the applesauce. He shook his head and got back to the matter at hand. "Unless this cheese is particularly flammable or secretly made with gasoline, we should be okay," he reassured her.

"She was looking for spirits," Rilla said, then lowered her voice. "I believe she is quite mad."

"In this place, we're all a little mad," Peter said. He finally decided on cheddar for the sandwich. "You ever have grilled cheese at all?"

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm perfectly normal, thank you very much," Rilla told him. "And no. Susan has views about sandwiches."

Re: Cook

[identity profile] theotherpeter.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know how you can attend this school and not go a little crazy," Peter said. "It's about the only way to cope with everything." He chuckled to himself.

He gestured at his assembled but ungrilled cheese sandwich. "Susan doesn't like sandwiches?"

"She thinks it's lazy," Rilla said primly. "If you're going to cook, cook."

Re: Cook

[identity profile] theotherpeter.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Peter chuckled. "Fair enough, if you've got lots of time," he said. "Does this mean you think we should dream a little bigger, here?"

"Well, she's the cook. That's what she does now that none of us need tending after," Rilla replied with a little smile. "Perhaps something a little more challenging? Cheese soup?"

Sookie went with another American classic -- macaroni and cheese. (Not from a box. As fun as the shapes could be.) She knew her way around the recipe pretty well, but would still welcome help, considering her obvious distraction.

"Mind help?" Tara asked, wandering over. "We did pretty well with the muffins last week..."

Plus, Bobby was away and Kennedy was a hedgehog poking out of Tara's backpack. They could probably both use the distraction.

"Sure!" Sookie chirped, and yeah, her line of thinking was basically the same. Hence how she asked a second later, "So that's Kennedy, huh?" with a nod towards said backpack.

"Since Monday night," Tara said. "She's done it before. I'm just ... kind of following her around and waiting it out."

The hedgehog looked indignant.

"She moves fast when she's not asleep. Which is a lot."

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"She's adorable," Sookie offered, because she knew full well it was pretty much the only time she'd ever get away with declaring as much. "And I bet it beats being a kangaroo. Could be worse."
life_inshadow: ([neu] are you kidding?)

Re: Cook

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2010-07-21 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"She is," Tara said. (She could usually get away with saying so, but it was easier when Kennedy was a hedgehog and wouldn't' even pretend to be affronted. "B-but a kangaroo would be cool, too -- she could carry my books in her pouch. Who turns into a kangaroo?"

As she talked, she was setting the pan of water on the stove to boil the noodles.

Re: Cook

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I did," she admitted sheepishly. "Last year. I swear, I think Bobby somehow tempted fate and did it to me, because we had just been talking about whether kangaroos know sign language."

Re: Cook

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2010-07-21 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"... well, did they?" Tara said, asking the obvious question. "I don't think they'd be much good at it. 'Cause, uh -- paws."

Re: Cook

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I wasn't gifted with special sign language powers," Sookie volunteered. "So probably not. I don't think they'd be good at it either, but...you know how Bobby's super-weird sometimes. It was so his idea."

It was so a joint idea.

"I think he brings it out in people," Tara offered with a slight smile. (Meaning she guessed it was a joint idea.) "It's all quiet over in our cabin with him out and Kennedy like this. You could come visit if yours is making you nuts."

Re: Cook

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"I might take you up on that," she admitted. "I mean, it's not too bad -- it's me and Emma and Tahiri and Blysse on my side of the cabin -- but I'm never going to turn down the opportunity to get to coo at Kennedy when she can't yell at me, for one thing."
life_inshadow: ([neu] I'm talking to you)

Re: Cook

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2010-07-21 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Tara covered the hedgehog's wee ears and whispered, "That's part of why I'm not rushing to find a spell to change her back. She's too cute like this."

"It sounds like you got a good cabin," she added, going back to stir the pasta. ""Ours is nice, just feels empty with fewer than eight people, y'know?"
