Competitive Cooking - Wednesday, Period 3 [7/14]

Piper was a bit distracted today since her mind was on the dreams she'd been having. So she just got right to it.

"Morning everyone. Today, you'll actually get to cook something," she greeted. "The instructions are simple today. I'd like for you to pair up and make anything you want as long as apples are involved somehow. That's going to be your secret ingredient. Afterward, Angela, Hoshi, and I will judge the results."

She realized that could possibly be a health hazard, and that she was asking a lot of her TAs. "Anyway, if you have any questions, any of us are available to answer them. Now, get to it and have fun!"

"Sure!" Dandelion replied happily and then paused to give Rilla a suspicious look. "You're not a Viking are you?"

"I'm a Blythe," Rilla said, tossing her head. "What happened to your hair?"

"My hair?" Dandelion asked as she pulled it in front of her face. "What's wrong with it?"

"It's an...unusual...colour," Rilla said, reaching for the apples.

"Pink is unusual?" Dandelion asked frowning at her hair. "I always thought of it as a girly color. Oh well. How do you want to make the applesauce? The easy way?"

"Cutting them up and boiling until they get soft?" Rilla checked a little warily. "And pink is a lovely colour. I just am not used to it being a hair colour."

"Oh! You must be an alien then," Dandelion said with a nod of how this logic makes sense. "It's totes a normal hair color. Can I see you without your human mask?"

Rilla blinked rapidly. "I beg your pardon?"

"Oh, I get it. Don't want to scare off anyone," Dandelion concluded. "Little bit of advice? The wardrobe is a dead giveaway. Right. Now let's find a hammer and get cooking!"

Apparently Dandelion has a different way of making applesauce.

"Hammer?" Rilla repeated, beginning to look a little alarmed.

"Sure!" Dandelion exclaimed. "Makes the apples mooshy."

Rilla's forehead furrowed. She didn't have a lot of experience in the kitchen, but she was fairly confident that wasn't how Susan made applesauce at home.

Then again, she reflected, Susan wasn't working with a pink-haired probable lunatic.

"That sounds like a plan," she agreed faintly.

"Excellent!" Dandelion said as she began to rummage through the drawers. "We just need a really big hammer. Like the one Gallagher uses. And ponchos."

"...ponchos?"

"Well it could get messy..."

"But aren't ponchos rather unattractive articles of clothing?"

Clearly Rilla had her priorities in order.

"Hey, if you want to get apple chunks lodged on your clothes that's up to you," Dandelion said pulling out a cast iron frying pan. "Okay. No hammer. We'll just use this to smash apples."

"Oh merciful heavens," Rilla squeaked, ducking behind the counter for cover.

"See, this is why we need ponchos," Dandelion said as he raised the pan overhead and brought it down on an apple, effectively making it smooshy.

"Susan would never let you near her kitchen!" Rilla cried.

Dandelion paused for a moment as she wiped some apple off her face.

"Funny. They don't let me near the kitchen at home either."

"Can't imagine why," Rilla said a little dryly, picking apple from her hair. "Should we try picking the seeds out of the sauce?"

"Those won't add extra flavor?" Dandelion asked as she started scooping apple smoosh into a bowl.

"I believe they might be poisonous," Rilla said earnestly.

"These tiny things?" Dandelion said picking up one and eyeballing it. "Really?"
