Competitive Cooking - Wednesday, Period 3 [7/7]

When the students arrived at one of the home ec classrooms, they found stations set up with ovens and kitchen supplies. There were a few fire extinguishers nearby as well. Piper was not going to take any chances, especially after an incident with fire during the class she taught four years ago.

"Good morning," she greeted, acknowledging each student. "Welcome to Competitive Cooking, though there won't be much of that today. This is going to be the typical easy class with introductions. First, I'd like to know your names, favorite foods, and something interesting about each of you. Afterward, I'd like each of you to get a bit acclimated with the cooking stations. And please read this handout on proper knife use." She was taking safety very seriously. "If you have any questions about how anything works, that's what I'm here for. Or you can ask one of my lovely TAs, Hoshi and Angela. We'd be happy to help out."

She figured there might be people in the class who've never seen an oven before.

"So. Introductions. I'll go first," Piper said to the class. "My names is Piper Halliwell. Please just call me Piper. I'm actually a former student, but I graduated before any of you even started classes here. One of my favorite foods is chocolate. You can't really go wrong with that. The interesting fact about me? I'm a witch. But I assure you, there won't be any magic in this class."

Unless she had to freeze a fire or something, but she kept that to herself.

"Okay, who's next?" she asked, nodding at a random student to continue.

After making sure there was a first-aid handy, Hoshi kept a watchful eye on the students. She hoped there wouldn't be any knife-related accidents.

"Hoshi-san!" Hinata said, with quiet delight. "I had not expected to see you here, th-though if I had thought about it, I might have guessed."

"I couldn't resist picking up one more class," said Hoshi, smiling. "Especially when I heard that it was a cooking class! Plus I know Piper's kids, or at least the alternate universe versions that went to school here."

"You do?" she asked, trying to think who that might be. "That does sound like an almost ideal situation for you to be here. Should I congratulate you on being a TA?"

"Of course!" asked Hoshi. "I couldn't resist the opportunity when Piper asked me, and it's nice to be able to stick around Fandom for a little while longer."

That got a smile out of her.

"Would you say that you're happier to be able to stay than you are excited about getting to move on?"

"I'm very happy to be staying," said Hoshi, grinning. "In fact, I won't be going very far when it comes time to leave. I'm getting an apartment on the mainland with a friend from Fandom. That way, I'll have a place to come home to when I'm between adventures."

"And a quick way to get to the island in case of Fandom striking?" she teased. "Where, on island, no one will care if you happen to be a boy for the day."

"That's always an added benefit," said Hoshi. "Plus Fandom feels more like home to me than anywhere else. I'm not sure if I can entirely leave."

"Perhaps you could come back and stay," she suggested. "Once you're content with the additional schooling you want."

"That would be really nice," said Hoshi. "I plan on visiting as often as I can, but it would be nice to stay. Maybe someday once I'm done with university..."

"But a bit too early to want to say either way?" she said gently. "I'm sure you'll have fun in university."

"If there's one thing I have learned in Fandom, it's that sometimes I need to remember to act my act," said Hoshi. "I'm just barely 18, or at least I will be by this weekend. I have plenty of time to do my studies and explore the universe a bit before I think about settling down anywhere."

"I wonder," she said thoughtfully, "if we grow up faster here because there is less supervision?"

"I suppose it certainly helps us become more independent," said Hoshi. "At the same time, there's still been teachers that I looked up to. I never felt totally unsupervised in Fandom."

"The pressures are different," she said, trying to find words to explain what she meant. "Parents have... certain expectations. The teachers here have different ones than what our parents might want of us."

"And teachers are less likely to use guilt trips to persuade us," said Hoshi. "My mother is very good with guilt. I don't miss that."

"It's true," she agreed, though guilt was only part of what her father did. "It's easier without that sort of thing."
