Competitive Cooking - Wednesday, Period 3 [7/7]

When the students arrived at one of the home ec classrooms, they found stations set up with ovens and kitchen supplies. There were a few fire extinguishers nearby as well. Piper was not going to take any chances, especially after an incident with fire during the class she taught four years ago.

"Good morning," she greeted, acknowledging each student. "Welcome to Competitive Cooking, though there won't be much of that today. This is going to be the typical easy class with introductions. First, I'd like to know your names, favorite foods, and something interesting about each of you. Afterward, I'd like each of you to get a bit acclimated with the cooking stations. And please read this handout on proper knife use." She was taking safety very seriously. "If you have any questions about how anything works, that's what I'm here for. Or you can ask one of my lovely TAs, Hoshi and Angela. We'd be happy to help out."

She figured there might be people in the class who've never seen an oven before.

"So. Introductions. I'll go first," Piper said to the class. "My names is Piper Halliwell. Please just call me Piper. I'm actually a former student, but I graduated before any of you even started classes here. One of my favorite foods is chocolate. You can't really go wrong with that. The interesting fact about me? I'm a witch. But I assure you, there won't be any magic in this class."

Unless she had to freeze a fire or something, but she kept that to herself.

"Okay, who's next?" she asked, nodding at a random student to continue.

The professor's manner reassured Hinata that, for all that one class was insane, this class appeared to be quite pleasantly normal. (She liked that.)

"I am Hinata," she said, when her turn came around. "My favourite food is cinnamon rolls..." A hesitation while she tried to come up with an interesting fact. "And I am a ninja."

Which she didn't find that interesting but then, to her, most of her wasn't.

"Welcome, Hinata. I like cinnamon rolls, too. They're fun to bake," Piper said, smiling. "And you're a ninja, huh? Cool."

She thought it was interesting.

"I'm Dandelion!" she said waving her hand in the air though... yeah, she probably didn't need to be called on. "I love shrimp and tacos and I know most of the lyrics to the saddest song in the world and I hope one day to be as good with the lathe as Master Carpenter Norm Abrams. Also? I hate vikings."

Wow, this girl was certainly enthusiastic. "Nice to meet you, Dandelion. Why do you hate Vikings?"

Of all the interesting things mentioned there, that's the one that stuck out.

"Peter Bishop," he introduced. "And really, I'm not even sure what my favorite food is. Not saying that I like just about anything, just my enthusiasm isn't always the highest."

No kidding, Mr. Sarcasm.

"But, what red-blooded American doesn't love a nice thick, juicy cheeseburger, right? And as for an interesting fact... I play the piano."

"Vegetarians probably wouldn't," Piper pointed out. Grinning, she added, "Guess that means more for us."

Cassidy was smiling, very much excited, but still using decorum.

"My name is Cassidy. My favorite food is chocolate and an interesting thing about me is that I am also a witch, just from a different world than this one."

"So you like chocolate and you are a witch," Piper said, raising an eyebrow. "I think you'll fit right into this class."

Tara was totally stifling an urge to just put her head down on the desk and nap -- she hadn't really had time to go to bed after getting back from Azarath. But she perked up (as much as she could, anyhow) when Ms. Halliwell mentioned being a witch.

"I'm Tara," she said softly. "My favorite food is pancakes. M-my interesting fact is that I'm also a witch, and I'm one of the leaders of the Magic & Support Reserves."

"Nice to meet another witch," Piper said, smiling. Obviously this was not the Tara she knew a few years ago. "Magic Reserves sounds intriguing. Wish there'd been something like that when I was a student here."

"I'm Sookie, um, my favorite foods are fried chicken and pie," she said, giving a little wave. "And interesting fact-wise, I'm telepathic." She figured that counted, even if it was kinda lazy.

"Good choices for favorite food," Piper grinned. Figuring Sookie had been asked about the telepathy a lot, she went in another direction. "Do you have a specific favorite kind of pie?"

Oddly enough, this was the hardest introduction so far for Elle.

"My name's Elle Bishop, my favorite food is... well, it's kind of hard to choose, and interesting fact... um... I have a special ability."

What? It was interesting!

The handout got a quick scan before it was tucked away so that she could study the cooking stations fully.

Yes, this class would be fun, she thought.

After making sure there was a first-aid handy, Hoshi kept a watchful eye on the students. She hoped there wouldn't be any knife-related accidents.

So long as no one asked her questions more complex than 'so, about handling knifes...', Angela was pretty confident she could answer it.

Or at least defer to a real cooking expert, rather than she who was here as more of a taste tester.
