Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees, and so there wasn't as much shade either. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Believe it or not, it's completely edible," Luke said, laughing a little. "It's very chewy, but sweet. And I wouldn't recommend eating too many at once."

"Speaking from experience?" she asked, actually smiling.

"I've suffered from candy overdose more than once," Luke said, sighing. "I can't resist it. It's so good."

"We all have our weaknesses," she replied with a solemn nod. "Are you new, too?"

"Yeah," he said, nodding. "I'm Luke. Nice to meet you."

"Same. Katniss," she offered in return. "Your home must not be that different from this if you recognize things like...well, I'm not sure what this is, either?" she added, holding up a Twinkie, now. "Bread?"

"More like a cream filled cake. The technical term is Twinkie," Luke said, almost feeling embarrassed for his fellow Americans and their stupid food names. "I'm from this country, yeah, but you'd be surprised at how different it can be. The food is one of the few things that is the same."

"Really?" she asked, tilting her head at him and setting the Twinkie down on her plate. She was...cautious about that one. She'd eaten worse things, though. "Are you from this year, too?" That was a weird question to have to ask, but she was learning it was necessary.

"I just found out I'm from a few years in the past. Nothing too dramatic though," Luke said. "What about you?"

"I'm a hundred and fifty years in the past now, give or take," Katniss estimated, making a little face. "So. It could be worse, if you're feeling displaced at all."

"Woooooow," Luke drawled out. "No wonder you don't recognize the food. We had to have evolved from Twinkies and gummi bears in the future."

"Sort of," she admitted, smiling a little. "There's still insane food, but only in certain places. The people of the future are more interested in making food do interesting things, or having it appear in beautiful colors."

Not that she hadn't loved the food of the Capitol. She just didn't understand why things had to be orange or pink to taste good.

"What kind of interesting things could food possibly do?" Luke asked, even though he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to know.

"Catch on fire spontaneously," not that she hadn't liked that, "or there's food that's genetically engineered to be tiny, or they fill things with sauces to surprise you so that they explode when you bite them. That sort of thing. Novelty food."

She didn't really approve of it -- she went hungry enough that the idea of eating just for fun still seemed bizarre. But it had been the only thing she'd liked about the Capitol, after all. She'd said so in her interview.

"That seems like a business my brothers would get into," Luke said. Who knows, maybe they were the ones that invented it in the future. "But I don't think I'd be into it. I like my food straightforward. No surprises."

"Brothers?" she asked, curious. "You're related to cooks?"

"No, I'm related to people who would enjoy making food that explodes," Luke said. "...I could be related to a cook though. I have a lot of siblings."

"You don't know? Must be a lot," she said, sort of bewildered by that. She knew everything about Prim.

"Yeah," Luke said, rubbing the back of his neck. "My dad's, uh, really old. He's had a lot of time to have kids."
