Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees, and so there wasn't as much shade either. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"There is a roof over my head should I wish it, my belly is full, and none to give trouble to me or Blind Seer," she said, nodding at the large blue-eyed wolf sprawled a few paces back, whose head lifted at mention of his name. "So, yes. I like."

Katniss felt some relief hearing all of that. Not that her life would be different, in those regards, in District 12, but it was a comfort all the same. Her attention turned to the wolf, and the memories of the mutts were a little too fresh in her mind to be able to look at him too long. "Blind Seer," she repeated, looking back to the other girl. "Is he a wolf?"

"Is," she nodded, pleased that Katniss had deduced that rather than call him a dog. "But not quite the same as wolves from this world."

"No?" Katniss gave him another wary glance. "Is he friendly?"

Firekeeper bit her lip and considered how to best answer that question. "Yes," she answered after a moment. "Not tame, but he obey human rules of this place. And make friends here, as I have." Blind Seer could smell the girl's wariness, unsurprisingly, and so didn't move from his spot except to offer Katniss a nod of acknowledgement.

"He understands us," Katniss remarked, eyes wide. "Um. Hello," she added, cautiously, to the wolf.

"Of course," Firekeeper nodded. "He learn human language as I did."

In response to the greeting, Blind Seer stood and walked- slowly- a few paces closer, before stopping and giving Katniss a curious look that seemed to say "what now?"

Katniss gave him a cautious look. "The last wolves I met were also...intelligent," she said carefully. "But not friendly. At all."

That summed it up well.

At the first part of her statement, Firekeeper had been ready to reply with a pleased sort of curiosity; now that she knew that wolves comparable to the Royal Wolves did exist on other words, she was always glad to hear of more. But as Katniss continued to speak, she was glad that she'd tramped down on that initial urge.

"You meet such," she realized, with a slight frown.

"Not that I, um, think you aren't," she added to Blind Seer. "But yes. They were...creations. Not natural animals," she said, looking back to the other girl.

"Maimalodalu?" Firekeeper asked, surprised. Blind Seer echoed her surprise with a twitch of his tail and a curious tilt of his head.

"I don't know that word," Katniss admitted, looking curious in return.

"Many years ago, when humans first comed to what they call the New World from the Old, they have sorcery. And these sorcerers, they see the yarimaimalom- the Wise Beasts- and their strength, their speed, and they wish it for their own. So they try and take the bodies of the Wise Beasts, but these do not want to be taken, and they fight, and when the fighting is done, they win. But left in bodies not man nor beast," she explained. It still made her angry, even though it had all happened many years before even her parents' parents had been born.

Katniss, at this point, was clinging to what Rosalind had said about different worlds. Because this was clearly a world different from her own -- even the Capitol couldn't do magic.

"So they were trapped between animals and humans?" she asked carefully.

Firekeeper nodded. "And not so pleased at this fate," she said sadly. It was a bit of an understatement, yeah.

"No, I'd guess not," Katniss said, frowning. "In my world, our scientists can make animals with human brains. It's similar?"

"Why would they do such?" Firekeeper asked, visibly disgusted.

"Because they can," Katniss said as honestly as she knew how. She didn't even care if she was under surveillance at this point -- she was sure that was the truth.

"Then they is just like the Old World sorcerers," Firekeeper decided. "Using power to do wicked things." It was clear she Did Not Approve. Nor did Blind Seer, whose tail twitched as he let out a low, rumbling growl.
