Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

More tables and chairs had been set up further out on the lawn, where there weren't as many trees, and so there wasn't as much shade either. Still, it was bound to be quieter over here than closer to the main area.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh!" Alexander instantly went into trying to sound positive, to push past all of his nervousness. "It's lovely. A very nice place, so far. And there are so many people! The castle is beautiful, and everyone seems very friendly. Not to mention the weather, and the proximity to the ocean is very nice, too..."

Yeah, the nervousness wasn't really well hidden in all of that.

"Nothing bad has happened so far?" asked Harper, noticing the nervousness.

"Oh! No," Alexander shook his head, eager to remedy that impression. "As I said, everyone's been so kind and friendly! It's just..."

It was clear that he wasn't very good at hiding his nerves, so he might as well fess up to them. "I'm just a little apprehensive," he admitted, leaning in slightly and lowering his voice as if to keep from anyone overhearing. "I've never really been in a situation like this before. Never have I seen so many people in one place! Not even during the grandest of events back home!"

Harper gave him a reassuring smile. "You're obviously not from New York like me. I guess it can be a little scary at first, but you get used to it. And people are all pretty friendly around here, although I guess you get the occasional bad apple," she said. Her little sibling from the last term might fall into the latter category, though Harper hoped that he would eventually come around.

"I suppose a few bad apples don't need to spoil the whole barrel, though," said Alexander, taking the reassuring smile to heart and returning on back to Harper. "I'll have to keep an eye out; I'm fairly sure I've yet to meet any so far, though."

Even if he was still nervous about that Maladicta.

"Anything else I should warn you about?" asked Harper. "I'm really good at giving advice. You can ask me anything!"

Alexander couldn't help chuckling at the offer. "Shouldn't I be the one asking you what I should be warned about? I've only just arrived; I wouldn't know where to start."

There was a pause.

"Is there anything else you should warn me about, Lady Harper?"

"There's the wildlife, for starters," said Harper. "Fandom has some odd creatures running around that take some getting used to. The teal deer aren't that bad at all. In fact, I've got a lot of nice sketches of them. But the gremlins are much worse. You really have to be careful around them."

She hesitated at that point. If the new kid was going to freak out, it was most likely to happen after the gremlin warning.

Alexander grew up in a land where bears lived in houses and wore clothing. He should be fine, so long as no one was trying to kill him or put him in a jar.

"I've heard of gremlins," he said in a low tone, having read something about them in one of Manannan's books. "They do sound like troublesome creatures. This land has an abundance of them? And sketches? Do you draw, then?"

"There's quite a few gremlins running around, and they get into the dorms. That's why you have to watch out," said Harper. "And I draw, paint, and sew. I'm fairly artistic."

She had the talent for the arts, alright. Harper was just lacking in taste.

Keep an eye out for gremlins. Alexander nodded, noting to do just that, but then he realized one issue with that.

"Er, what do they look like? Gremlins?"

The book didn't have pictures. "You could draw one for me?"

"I should draw one! That's a really cool idea," said Harper, excited. "They're short, green critters with large ears in comparison to their heads. Oh, and they have sharp teeth. That's the part you have to be worried about because they like to bite people, and people who get bitten have these vivid hallucinations."

"Hallucinations!" Alexander's eyes widened a little. "Of what sort? That does sound unpleasant!"

"Imagine someone catching you doing the most embarrassing thing ever, because that's what it like when it finally wears off," said Harper. "When I got bitten, I showed up at work with a guitar and danced around like I was in a music video."

"...I don't believe I know what a music video is," Alexander admitted sheepishly, wondering if it was as bad as he was thinking.

"Definitely not from New York, then," said Harper, thinking for a moment before announcing, "I'll have to introduce you to MTV, though they don't really play videos anymore."
