Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The recent cold front had been a welcome weather pattern as far as Zoe was concerned, and she was very grateful for how things had turned out today - it was sunny and breezy, and just cool enough that no one would pass out from heat exhaustion. Hopefully.

Beneath the blue and gold streamers and balloons, tables had been set up with drinks and food, including an entire table of moddable different ice cream flavors. As always, there was a stack of nametags set down next two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

[OCD is up! Have at it! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Could be, man, could be," Anders answered, holding a hand out. "Still can't believe it's been a couple years since I graduated. I'm standing here and it's all coming back, you know, the shirtless picnics and all of that."

"Shirtlessness is still sacred around here," Reno replied almost solemnly as he took the other guy by the hand and shook. "Some things ain't never gonna change, yo. Name's Reno. Class of '09, and they could only get rid of me for a year before I came crawlin' back."

"Sam Anders, but ditch the 'Sam,'" he requested, deciding that Reno's handshake was pretty damn impressive already. "I held out a little longer than you, but don't think I haven't been feeling the pull for a while. Place gets its hooks in you good, am I right?"

"Damn right," Reno laughed. Anders had a pretty impressive handshake himself, he decided. "Kinda gets under your skin, yo. Did it follow you back too, after you left? Throwin' weird shit at you now an' then? My boss back home had to deal with me walkin' in to torment him with my tits one day."

Reno was still fully convinced that he'd been the hottest lesbian in Edge at the time.

He probably had been.

"... I didn't come back just for the tits, by the way."

"Oh, frak yes," Anders laughed. "The random kids, my things turning into people, psychotic mistletoe chasing us around. Everything that drove me crazy while I was here, still drives me crazy because I live with a bunch of other grads, and I missed it so much I had to come back."

He glanced out toward the mingling kids and ran a hand through his hair. "This your first day back teaching, too, or you been around longer?"

Someone had missed out on the information about the teaching buddy system in his excitement.

Reno hadn't missed out on said information. Reno was kind of thrilled that the school board had decided to hand him a Rookie of his very own. Sort of.

"I've been back since the beginning of the summer," Reno replied. "Taught a workshop on bein' rookies, last term. This term, I'm tryin' to talk my students through the end of the friggin' world. I'm just full of light an' fluffy subject matter, yo."

Oh yes. Totally light and fluffy.

"So... Anders. Funny thing, I think you're stuck with me showin' you the ropes of this whole teaching gig, yo. Not like you need help figurin' out the island or anything, right?"

"Nah," Anders answered, and waved a hand. "Bigger than it was when I started, but I think I know the place pretty frakkin' well."

Hang on a second, light and fluffy?

"End of the world -- you think that many of 'em are gonna need to know?"

"I needed to know," Reno mused, shrugging. "I needed to know--"

He paused. He had to count this on his fingers, yes. Should he include Genesis and his copies, or no?

"--Plenty of times," he said. Yes, after taking that minute to count, and everything. "Could'a come in handy for my girlfriend, too. And goin' by the roster, there are at least a couple students interested in learnin' about it. Or else the office screwed up on the head count again."

He blamed the moose.

"Good old office staff," Anders said with far more affection than that hapless bunch of paper-pushers probably deserved. "What am I saying, anyway? Gods know where I live we're always trying to stop that from happening."

They'd managed to succeed so far, but who knew if that was going to last?

"That could end up being one of the most useful classes on the curriculum here. So what's it like, teaching 'em, man? Never done anything like this before. Help a guy out? I gotta know what I'm in for."

"They ain't so bad, really," Reno noted. "Think about what you were like when you were a student here, and then remember all the ways you went outta your way to piss off your teachers, and that'll be them. Karma's a bitch, yo."

Just ask the duck that was now living in Reno's bathtub.

"You talk to 'em like you wanted your teachers to talk to you, don't treat 'em like idiots, and they won't be too bad, yoto. So, what is it you're showvin' down their throats this term, pal?"
