There were some things that warranted Jonothon not necessarily focusing as thoroughly on his duty as Library Aide as perhaps he ought to.

England vs. Germany in the World Cup was, of course, one of those things. He'd even managed to figure out how to stream video on the internet for just such an occasion, and his eyes were glued to the screen.

... The sound was on mute, though. There was only so much vuvuzela he could possibly stand without blowing up the bloody computer.

//Right,// Jono agreed, //but they're allowed to hit it off of other body parts. Their hips, their chest, their heads.//

So it was really more like everything-but-handsball. But footie just sounded better.

"Right," Didi repeated. "And England is usually pretty good at it, but the fates were against them this game?"

//And the referees,// Jono stressed, giving the monitor the stinkeye as Germany scored their first goal all over again. //And the organizers of the event, who don't believe in the technology to prove that the ball was in.//

It was! It had been! It was a conspiracy!

"You mean that instant replay stuff?" Didi asked. "I don't believe in it. I kind of like that everybody relies on human judgment."

... this was not an opinion she had ever subjected to much logic, no.

Jono was giving her the wide, incredulous eyes of a man whose team had just lost their shot at the World Cup because of one bad call and the crippling lack of confidence that followed shortly after.

//They judged wrong.//

She couldn't argue her point more when his eyes looked like that. It would be like arguing with a scrawny puppy. A scrawny puppy with wet fur.

"Evil bastards," she said smoothly. "Sorry. I hadn't thought about it much."

A scrawny shivering puppy with wet fur, who was whining, perhaps?

At any rate, he relented, slightly, at her apology.

//Well... Maybe they were at th'wrong angle or sommat...// He rubbed at the bandages along the back of his neck, awkwardly. //And it was only a little bit of th'way over the line. But it was over the line. We should have had it.//

And there was Germany's second goal, all over again. Jono gave the screen another sour look, just because he could.

Like a scrawny, wet, shivering puppy who was stuck in a snowbank.

Didi made a soothing noise. "Bastards," she said. "How can I take your mind off of it?"

And now the scrawny, wet, shivering puppy in the snowbank was reaching for her hand with one of his. And for the mouse in order to turn the game off with the other.

//We should do something,// he decided. //Something that has absolutely nothing to do with footie. Unless you happened to want to play footie.//

"Thanks, but I'll pass," Didi said. "But I like the way you think. Got a specific something in mind? It's been a while since we went to a movie or a concert."

//Well, there is a cinema in town,// Jono noted. //Much easier to get to than making our way out to th'mainland. Unless there's an outdoor festival going on or some such thing. That might almost be worth it...//

And now he was overthinking this, yes.

"Mosquitos," Didi reminded him. Sure, she loved all forms of life, blah blah blah, but she made an exception for forms of life that wanted to make her itch herself to death. "I'd rather do the regular theater. The movies this summer look kind of bad, but that's fun too."

//Anything you can get away with throwing popcorn at, hm?// Jono could get behind that logic, absolutely. //There is that film about the toys, I suppose...//

Because it wasn't scary, and he knew how much she liked Disney, so...

Didi perked up instantly. "You don't mind a sobby girlfriend? 'Cause, from everything I've heard, that'll definitely make me cry."

//I'll bring tissues,// Jono replied, so very solemnly, honest.

Odds were, he'd be in need of one or two, himself.

Didi smiled. "Good. Wednesday?"

//Wednesday,// Jono agreed, smiling right on back. //It's a date, luv.//
