Laser Tag Adventures [First Period, Thursday]

Rick had planned out a truly epic final for his class. Unfortunately, Rick had also gotten bitten by a gremlin this morning, so when the class arrived for their class, he was nowhere to be seen, the Danger Shop resembled some kind of testing facility, strange guns could be seen instead of the usual vests.

"Good Morning Test Students," Rick's voice came over the loud-speakers, sounding decidedly more feminine and monotone than usual. "You Have Been Chosen To Test The ASHPD. You Will Receive Instructions On Its Use During The Testing Phase."

"You Have Until The End Of The Class To Complete The Testing Phase." A pause. "Just So You Know I Have Cake. For You."

. . . oh, look, Tahiri had run out of laundry and only had one of her older bright orange flight suits to wear today.

And she was barefoot, but that was normal.

This setup, though, was kind of freaky, and what the kriff did this gun do? Weird. Maybe she'd find someone else to help her. ~~Maybe Black Mesa . . .~~

Alex didn't scare easily but even he got a mild case of the willies at this setup and Professor Castle's voice sounding like that. Creepy.

Does it really need to be said that Kyle was automatically suspicious? Because he was. Big time.

But that cake did sound tempting.

Safeties are on, so you won't die, just have to do the level over and over until you succeed or the class ends.

Okay, the ASHPD was bizarre, and it took Tahiri a while to get the hang of it, at which point she really wished they had some of these at home. (Even if she couldn't quite work out how the physics of it made any sense.)

It was a good thing that a consequence for failure had not been added to this version of the test. Well . . . that consequence for failure was pretty much the story of Tahiri's life when she was on a mission back home anyway, but when she crawled out from beneath a piston into the 18th test chamber and (pressed against a wall to avoid the lasers from the drones while she watched the path of the energy ball bouncing around) looked out at the chasm with the really gross-looking water at the bottom of it, she could live without that consequence for failure.

Knocking out the laser-shooting droids by shooting portals for the energy ball was easy. Figuring out how to trigger the switch on the door guarding the energy receptacle to activate the scaffolding was a little trickier.

It took her the entire rest of the class period to figure out the timing of how to shoot the portals to fling herself all the way across the test chamber to the tiny room up top, though, and she was cranky by the end of it. ~~Not that her player is bitter about getting stuck on that damn level for weeks.~~

Kyle was wary of the portals at first, at least until Tahiri got going. Then he started making his way through the testing ground.

The biggest hold-up was when one portal ended up directly above the other portal and he kept looping around and around and around, through the ground, then falling out of the ceiling straight into the portal on the ground again. He fell over and over and over until he was about to be sick, but managed to time it so he could re-fire the ASHPD slightly off to the side.

Hitting the ground knocked the wind out of him, but he was happy to lay there for a while before moving on.

Aperture Science, we do what we must because we can.

There is pie though.

But I'm stupid happy about getting to play Portal in class. :D
