Magic of Baking: Week 7, Period 3

Alysha might have been looking more than a little bit distracted during this, the final meeting of their class. The tug in her heart that led back to her family was stronger than ever, and she couldn't quite concentrate on anything but the urge to call Charlie and have her take her home.

When Alysha found out which auntie had caused this, she was going to be very displeased.

"Last class today!" she said once everyone was assembled in the Home Ec room. "Thank you all for being a fun one, and I hope you've learned a little of use." Even if it was just the difference between sugar and salt... "Today we're working on making an Australian treat that's kinda awesome. The Pavlova. It's a little bit finicky so I'd advise you guys pair up to do this and double check your partner." She was rather hoping Karla and Rilla didn't pair up. That sounded like it would end badly.

"So, let's give it a try. And before you leave, pick up a copy of the recipe book I made up. It has all the receipes we made in class along with a moddable assortment of other ones to check out."

"Are you?" she asked, smiling a little at that because yeah, not so much with the believing that. "I'd love help. I'm not all vampirey and offensive still, am I?" Since the glowiness and shiny hair had basically worn off, she figured her vampire je ne sais quoi was probably gone, too. But hey, didn't hurt to ask."

"When it suits me," he snorted and leaned forward a little, sniffing the air dramatically. Not that he needed to. "No, your leech rescuer kept away, it seems."

She grinned at that, plucking up the recipe. "Yeah, he only stuck around briefly when I saw him last week. You can really smell 'em like that?"

"Yeah, they um... stink," he said, not so subtly. "He came back then?"

"I went home. He's my neighbor," she replied, starting to gather ingredients just to ensure they had them. Mentioning Bubba seemed like a bad idea.

"Lucky you can't smell them then," he shook his head and he should probably make himself useful. "Want me to do the egg breaking?"

"Go for it," she said. "You know how to separate 'em? And I might not be able to smell vampires, but I can't hear them, either. They're like mental dead space. Pun intended."

"I've done it before," he grinned as he grabbed the carton and a bowl. "Once or twice."

"What do you mean? They're soundless or something?"

"Mentally," she amended, tapping her temple. "I'm a telepath. Vampires either don't have thoughts, or just don't have them where I can hear them. It's...confusing. Makes me a little uneasy, honestly."

He glanced up at her in surprise, but then this was Fandom. Even if he liked his thoughts to him. "Thoughtless leeches sounds fitting," he decided. "Way less annoying than a bloodsucker that reads your mind."

"Exactly," she said, smiling at him. "Though, for me, it's sorta like not having one of my senses." She shook her head. "I'm just glad there aren't too many around here. They make me uneasy, a little."

He snorted. "You and me both," he said. There were still too many to his liking. He picked up the first egg and carefully broke it on the edge of the bowl. "They tend to piss me off."

"Couldn't tell," she said dryly, getting ready to sift the sugar.

"I hide it well," he deadpanned, glancing down in the eggshell that now only held the yolk. He wasn't sure if they'd need it later, but tossing it seemed stupid so he reached for another bowl to put it in. "So you didn't have to be rescued then? Cause that sounds like you had a better weekend then."

"Didn't have to be rescued by a vampire," she amended. "Still not a great weekend. But it's nice to be back, honestly. It's funny how I started missing this place."

He raised an eyebrow at her. "You're good at getting in trouble, aren't you?"

"I didn't go looking for it; trouble just finds me," she sighed, rolling her eyes.

"I think I've heard that before," he said with a laugh, grabbing the next egg.
