fandomhigh | Magic of Baking: Week 7, Period 3

Alysha might have been looking more than a little bit distracted during this, the final meeting of their class. The tug in her heart that led back to her family was stronger than ever, and she couldn't quite concentrate on anything but the urge to call Charlie and have her take her home.

When Alysha found out which auntie had caused this, she was going to be very displeased.

"Last class today!" she said once everyone was assembled in the Home Ec room. "Thank you all for being a fun one, and I hope you've learned a little of use." Even if it was just the difference between sugar and salt... "Today we're working on making an Australian treat that's kinda awesome. The Pavlova. It's a little bit finicky so I'd advise you guys pair up to do this and double check your partner." She was rather hoping Karla and Rilla didn't pair up. That sounded like it would end badly.

"So, let's give it a try. And before you leave, pick up a copy of the recipe book I made up. It has all the receipes we made in class along with a ~~moddable~~ assortment of other ones to check out."

"Too true!" Karla said cheerfully, grabbing a few eggs to begin separating. "We can bring it to Reserves afterwards."

Egg 1: Shattered in Karla's hands
Egg 2: Shell pieces got mixed in, too numerous to separate
Egg 3-4: Accidentally dropped
Egg 5: Separated! Unfortunately, it was the whites that got discarded
Egg 6-8: Yolk got mixed in
Egg 9: Whites successfully separated and placed in a bowl.

"Only three more to go!"

Cassidy had never really seen someone destroy so many eggs in an attempt to cook before. It was a good thing that her amazement could be taken as being impressed by Karla -- since she really was -- as she watched.

"While you're doing the hardest part of it, I can mix up the topping."

Yes, Cassidy, you definitely should be the one to mix up the ingredients for the topping.

Perhaps you should hide that vinegar, too.

It was almost artistic! Assuming failure was considered an artform.

"Good plan," Karla said, nodding. "This is taking a little longer than I expected."

Egg 10: Rolled off the counter.

"I'm sure I'll have them done soon, though. Hmmm...maybe we should ask Professor Gale for more eggs. We're running low."

Cassidy nodded. "I can go ask her (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2515290.html?thread=162379610#t162379610) while you're busy, Karla," she volunteered.

Vinegar, not at hand.

Cassidy, still impressed by all of this.

Karla nodded absently. "Go ahead," she said. "I have an idea of how to use Craft to help."

Cassidy soon came back with three more containers of ~~modded, la~~ eggs. Yes, she had counted how many eggs they were going through.

"Do you think this will be enough," she asked with concern in her voice and in her thoughts. "This is a more difficult recipe than I've ever attempted before."

It was even truth!

"That should be plenty," Karla said, currently wearing Egg number twelve on her shirt (better not to ask). "These eggs sure are tricksy."

Many small disasters (and many more eggs) later, Karla finally had a bowl of four egg whites in front of her. The sugar went in without a hitch, as did the electric mixer.

It was when the electric mixer was turned on--after, of course, Karla had thumbed it up to its max speed--that they encountered their next problem. Namely, egg whites and sugar flying everywhere.

"Oops."

While it wasn't the first time that Cassidy had worn ingredients meant to be cooked in the kitchen, it was the first time she could say she had ever been attacked by an electric mixer. Trying to rub some of the stuff off of her face she shook her head.

"That mixer thing has an attitude problem and now we have to start all over again." She said as she fixed it with a glare -- even though she wanted to giggle at how this class was going. "Maybe we should try mixing it by hand or by Craft instead of using the machine."

Because that would turn out so much better, Cassidy, really.

Karla thanked the Darkness she was wearing her traditional blue, instead of white or some other light color. Her clothing (and face and hair) were soaked through with egg. "I'm going to be late to my next class," she decided. "Because I need a very thorough shower after this."

She looked down at the little bit of egg white that remained in the bowl. "I can't believe I have to start all over," she groaned.

She frowned into the bowl. "We either start again or let Lady Alysha know that this recipe is too much for us?"

Because she was so not about to suggest that Karla let her redo this part in a quick fashion.

"Maybe we could clean up and go early?" Karla suggested eagerly. "And shower."

And if Cassidy hung back and made a perfect version of it, Karla would probably never even know.

Sigh.

Cassidy nodded. "This is a good plan. You go ahead and I'll stay back and clean this up since I don't have another class today." She smiled. "I'll see you at reserves."

They would get a good grade and Karla would never know that she whipped up a version to turn in for them both.

"You sure?" Karla asked. "I don't want to leave you to clean up all by yourself."

Though her next class did start immediately after this one ended. And she was practically dripping with egg.

Cassidy was completely sincere. "I don't mind at all. You have another class and I don't. I don't mind staying behind to help so my partner doesn't get into trouble for being late to her next class."

"Thanks, Cassidy," Karla said, giving the other witch a grateful look. It would have been a hug, but...yeah. Egg.

"I'll let Sookie know, and then go shower a lot. I think there's a shower in the school I can use and I'll just call new clothing in."

"Any time, Karla." Yeah, there was enough egg on them both already. "That sounds like a wise course of action," she said with a grin.

"You're the best. I'll make it up to you sometime with a trip to Chilly Boulder, okay? But I really should dash."

Though it was much more of a 'scurry' complete with 'tail between her legs' when Karla approached Sookie.

After Karla had left for the showers and Cassidy had spoken (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/2515290.html?thread=162390618#t162390618) to Sookie, she got to work preparing the assigned dessert.

Karla never had to know that Cassidy redid the assignment and turned it in for the both of them.

After finishing the dessert, she headed to the dorms for her own shower.
