Birth of Television Comedy, Monday, First Period

When the students got to the class room today, they'd find two things dominating the room: The DVD player, and a gigantic stack of silly hats of all shapes, sizes and colors. The bean bag chairs were back, too. Notably not in evidence was the teacher, but the TAs seemed ready to handle things.

"Hello," Jack said. He was wearing a colorful felt derby, which he thought suited him rather well. "Professor Mitchell couldn't be here for your last class today, so he left us in charge. We're ... exploring the importance of costuming to comedy."

This sounded better than 'we want to make people wear funny hats and laugh at them', yes.

He continued, "So put on your hats, note if they make you feel especially comedic, and sit back to watch Trixie & the Kittycats, which is a live-action adaptation of a vintage cartoon."

Kate, in her blue felt top hat, had been more than happy to sit back and let jack do the talking, but she had to chime in right before the movie started. "And we're totally making you wear funny hats just because you'll look ridiculous. And because we can. Enjoy the film."

"Morning, Officer."

Yeah, that was a smirking Kate tipping her hat to him.

"You're enjoying your authority far too much," he said, resisting the urge to instinctively yank the hat off his head. "I feel rather silly."

"That was the point," she replied, snickering. "Anyway, it's the last class. I'll be stripped of my authority after this."

"Since I'm the officer today, does that mean my authority usurps yours?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Nah," she said, wrinkling her nose. "TAs are all-powerful. We're like gods in a classroom."

"Gods?" he repeated, trying not to laugh. "You certainly have a high opinion of yourself, don't you?"

Note that he didn't say it was undeserved.

"Why wouldn't I have?"

Really, now. She thought it was completely deserved. Or acted like it was, anyway.

"Well, because you're easily distracted," he tried, smiling at her. "And you're wearing a hat that is far from god-like, I believe."

"Pfft, as if what I'm wearing has anything to do with it," she said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "It's an intrinsic quality. It's who I am, Bod. And I'm not easily distracted."

"You're not easily distracted?" he asked, raising that eyebrow again. "Really? I think you're lying."

"I'm not," she insisted, "either lying, or easily distracted."

"I have seen you get distracted, Kate," he said, wondering if she'd deny that. "And I've been the cause of some of those distractions. Am I wrong?"

Kate's turn to raise a brow. "No, but that doesn't mean I'm easily distracted."

"I think everyone can, at certain times, be easily distracted and I don't think you're any different," he declared. "Did you want me to prove it?"

"Not particularly," she decided. "Anyways, I don't see why being easily distracted would be an un-god-like trait."

"Well, that was a rather spectacular failure on my part," he said, blushing a bit and pulling his hat down a little more.

"I'm sure even gods get distracted," he finally continued, still blushing. "Everyone has flaws."

"See? So I'm totally a god. A goddess," she concluded. "Why are you blushing now?"

"I was trying to flirt with you and it didn't work," he said and laughed again. "I'm blushing because I'm embarrassed."

"Aww. You should try again." This was her idea of being encouraging "Maybe I got distracted. Or was waiting to hear some joke about someone getting arrested."

"Perhaps some other time," he said, rubbing one of his cheeks. "I don't think I can flirt on command. Perhaps another time once I'm better at it. I'm obviously not there yet."

"But how will you get better if you don't practice?" she asked.

"I don't know," he said, giving his silly hat another tug. "I don't know if I'm actually meant for flirting, anyway. Perhaps I just won't do it. Or won't actively do it."

"Poor me," she pouted at him. "Deprived of your flirting."

"I tried and it didn't work," he pointed out, laughing. "I'm not good at it so I'd rather not risk more embarrassment when it doesn't work. It's the safe option."

"Safe is boring," she decided, but shrugged anyway. "But suit yourself. Wouldn't want to get myself arrested for pressuring an officer of the law."
