When the students got to the class room today, they'd find two things dominating the room: The DVD player, and a gigantic stack of silly hats of all shapes, sizes and colors. The bean bag chairs were back, too. Notably not in evidence was the teacher, but the TAs seemed ready to handle things.

"Hello," Jack said. He was wearing a colorful felt derby, which he thought suited him rather well. "Professor Mitchell couldn't be here for your last class today, so he left us in charge. We're ... exploring the importance of costuming to comedy."

This sounded better than 'we want to make people wear funny hats and laugh at them', yes.

He continued, "So put on your hats, note if they make you feel especially comedic, and sit back to watch Trixie & the Kittycats, which is a live-action adaptation of a vintage cartoon."

Kate, in her blue felt top hat, had been more than happy to sit back and let jack do the talking, but she had to chime in right before the movie started. "And we're totally making you wear funny hats just because you'll look ridiculous. And because we can. Enjoy the film."

"But how will you get better if you don't practice?" she asked.

"I don't know," he said, giving his silly hat another tug. "I don't know if I'm actually meant for flirting, anyway. Perhaps I just won't do it. Or won't actively do it."

"Poor me," she pouted at him. "Deprived of your flirting."

"I tried and it didn't work," he pointed out, laughing. "I'm not good at it so I'd rather not risk more embarrassment when it doesn't work. It's the safe option."

"Safe is boring," she decided, but shrugged anyway. "But suit yourself. Wouldn't want to get myself arrested for pressuring an officer of the law."

"I don't have any handcuffs," he pointed out, reaching for his notebook and scribbling something quickly. However, he didn't show it to her. "How would I arrest you?"

"Well, you could run off to 'Dites and buy some," she suggested, smirking. "But then I'd have to tell Mitchell you left class."

Bod was still writing and didn't look up while she talked. "You could report me? Why?"

"My solemn duty as a TA." She peered at what he was doing, but was nowhere near enough to read it. "What are you writing, a novel?"

"No," he said simply, deciding that was all she'd get while he did what he did. He'd said he wasn't going to flirt (he lied about that) but that didn't mean he couldn't tease.

"Hmph. Well, I wasn't all that interested, anyway."

Lies.

"You're not?" He kept scribbling though he was almost finished. "Even if I tell you it's going to be for you?"

"No. Not at all." Lies lies lies. Poor ones, even. "Should I be?"

Bod finished what he'd been doing and closed his notebook. "No? All right, then. I'll keep it to myself. That's fine."

"Fine," Kate repeated, crossing her arms over her chest and looking idly around, making a show of not caring at all.

Bod actually wondered how long she'd resist. He kept his notebook tucked near his leg, one hand on it so she couldn't steal it away. He grinned at her before slouching back in his beanbag and enjoying his last day of class.

She could resist a surprisingly long time, actually.

Not forever, though, and eventually she did reach out her hand to him. But without saying a word.

Without a word, Bod handed Kate his notebook. She'd have to flip through a few pages before finding what he'd drawn though.

[DUN JUDGE ME. WORK IS BORING.]

So, she flipped. And she found, and she saw.

And then she was laughing. Really a lot. In a trying-to-keep-quiet way.

"Why are you laughing so hard?" he asked, trying to keep himself innocent. "That's art, Kate. You shouldn't laugh at art."

Even he didn't think it was art.

"Art can bring joy to people," she argued, managing to calm herself down even if she was still grinning. "Don't harsh my joy, Bod."

"Art is supposed to make you think," he decided, nodding. "Does that make you think?"

"That I'm still the artistically talented one out of the two of us?" she offered, teasing. "Yes, I think it's giving me ideas..."

"You should share them with me," he decided, nodding. "I'd love to know what my masterpiece evokes."

"I should totally come visit you," she said, nodding mock-solemnly. "And your door."
