Anatomy of a Trial [Period 4, Class #6, 6-17]

"This week's going to be a bit of potpourri," Alex said, setting down her tea on her desk. "You'll be doing closing arguments, which are very similar to opening arguments, except that you'll want to incorporate points from the trial itself. If you got a damning admission on cross, if you made salient arguments with your own witnesses, this is the time to pull those out."

"Or." And that was probably unexpected. "Or, you can postpone your closing arguments to next week, and instead ask questions about the draft you're working on so far. In that case, I'll expect a slightly more impressive close."

"In the meantime: we'll be reviewing for next week's final. Ask questions. And if you'd like to go over a past scenario that you're fuzzy on, I have the Danger Shop controls set up. You can do more Voir Dire, or examining witnesses, or anything you'd like."

"Shall we?"

Squall stepped in front of the jury box, and waited until he had caught the eyes of every single person sitting there, so he could glare at them and they could see how serious he was.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," he announced. "This guy is a criminal. People put a lot of faith and trust in doctors, because they fix us when we get hurt, and he violated that trust. Sure, the drugs he sold do have legitimate medical uses, but don't be fooled by that -- they were prescribed and sold with the INTENTION of being used to get stoned. And THAT is what makes it illegal."

Squall shrugged. "The police already did their part, and found all that evidence. I'm done with my part, which was showing it to you. Now, it's up to you. He's obviously guilty, but he can't go to jail until you all vote on it. I can't control what you do -- but you're going to have to live with whatever you decide."
