Library [06/16]

Sam got to the library a little early today, even after stopping at the Perk for coffee and breakfast. He got set up for the day quickly, the routine having become second nature after so long, and then settled in at the computer to check his e-mail and spend some time playing the Sims.

Yes, it still entertained him years later. Sometimes, he was easy to please.

Chuck came in around his usual time, with a rolled up European tabloid in his hand. Seemed to be the only way to keep track of Serena these days. "Hey. What are you up to?"

"Um. Nothing," Sam said, trying to minimize his game before Chuck could see. "What's up?"

"Right. Assuming it was porn," Chuck said even though he knew that wasn't it. "I was just catching up with my sister. Which, oddly enough, kind of has to do with porn too."

"It was not porn!" Sam said sharply, hoping Mr. DeTamble wouldn't overhear. "What does porn have to do with your sister? Or am I going to regret asking?"

"Well it's not porn exactly..." Chuck flipped the magazine open and handed it over to Sam. The words were in French, but the pictures of topless Serena probably said everything it needed to. "God, I love the lax censorship in European media."

"Whoa!" Sam said, putting his hand over the magazine to try to block the dirtiest parts of the pictures. "You could have just described that, I didn't need to see it. Does she know people were taking her picture?"

"Considering she's been caught in these types of situations a couple times a week all summer? Yeah, I think she knows," Chuck said. "Dan keeps sending me this stuff, wanting me to do something about it since Lily's gone but I'm not about to stop a hot chick from exposing herself."

"Yeah, but...don't you think something's wrong? Is she the type of person who likes exposing herself?" Sam said, like he knew anything about girls.

"She'd tell you no, but before she rehabilitated Serena was one of the few people that could keep up with me when it came to debauchery. So I'm not surprised," Chuck said. He shrugged. "She's just doing it for attention. Daddy didn't love her or something, I don't know. I zoned out when my therapists talked to me about the same thing."

"Maybe if you paid attention, the therapists would actually help you," Sam said. "And this isn't the kind of attention she needs. No one should see her like this."

"I don't need help," Chuck insisted. "And there's nothing I can do about Serena. She's like me; if someone tells her to stop doing something she's just gonna do something worse in retaliation."

"You could at least tell her to keep her top on. Can't she run around in a bikini?"

Chuck lifted an eyebrow. "It's Europe."

"So?" Sam asked. "I'm not a world traveler like you. Aren't there non-topless beaches?"

"I'm sure there are," Chuck said. "But why you'd want to go to one when there are so many topless beaches available is beyond me."

"Because maybe you want to swim and not stare at naked people?" Sam suggested.

Chuck looked at Sam like he was crazy. Because he clearly was.

"Yeah, I don't swim," he said. "I swear, you're like an old nun trapped in a hot guy's body."

"Thank you for the compliment on how hot I am," Sam said, looking smug. "I just...ogle when I'm supposed to. When the other person clearly wants to be ogled."

Chuck rolled his eyes. "Please, you already knew I thought you were hot. And I think naked on the people on the beach are fine with being looked at. They'd be wearing clothes if they weren't."

"Remind me never to go to a beach in Europe," Sam said, shaking his head at the thought as he pushed the magazine back to Chuck. "I'm sorry about Serena. I know you're getting a kick out of this, but I hope she stops before she gets hurt."

"Oh I'm sure she'll show up at my apartment in a few months, wanting me to solve her problems," Chuck said. "And I will, because I'm nice like that."

"You're the second best brother ever," Sam said with a laugh. "I guess there's not any way to help her now, realistically."

"Well I could get on the Bass jet and drag her back," Chuck said, tilting her head to the side. "But you saw how pissed I was after that happened to me."

"If she gets into serious trouble, dragging her back might be the best thing for her, just like it was with you," Sam said. "She'd realize it eventually. Probably."

"Well, she'll forgive me for taking her away from her partying," Chuck said. "I'm not sure she's smart enough to realize how degrading being dragged away is in the first place."
