Library [06/16]

Sam got to the library a little early today, even after stopping at the Perk for coffee and breakfast. He got set up for the day quickly, the routine having become second nature after so long, and then settled in at the computer to check his e-mail and spend some time playing the Sims.

Yes, it still entertained him years later. Sometimes, he was easy to please.

"Well, this is frustrating," Cindy said from Henry's doorway. She sounded far more amused than frustrated though. "I come bearing a birthday cake only to find I'm late to the pastry train."

She entered his office, holding a birthday cake (http://strategerie.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/chocolate-birthday-cake.jpg) from J,GoB. "You think you'll have room after that cupcake?" she teased.

"I think there is always room for cake," Henry said, gesturing Cindy in. "Thank you! I hadn't expected you to remember. That's -- wow. Wow is what it is."

Remember, stalk...they were both the same thing, right? Hey, it was just good spy protocol to have encrypted dossiers on everyone she worked with! One never knew when they'd have the beneficial side effect of knowing someone's birthday.

"All the work of the bakery," Cindy said, placing the cake on his desk. "Dinner last week exhausted my cooking tolerance for the next few--" decades "--months. But I'm glad you like it. I thought it looked delicious when I picked it up."

"Care for a slice?" Henry asked. "And you have to tell me when your birthday is so I can retaliate."

"Well, if you're going to insist," Cindy said with a grin, "I suppose I can manage a slice of rich, chocolately goodness. Since it is your birthday and all."

She had forgotten to grab useful items like plasticware or dishes, but she had a few napkins which could be pressed into service for plates. "My birthday, hmmm? Is that your price for sharing the cake with me?"

It was a full-service library, so Henry had some disposable flatware, plates and napkins in one of his office storage cabinets. He went over to recover them.

"It seems like a fair price to me," he said. "Unless you don't want chocolaty goodness on your own birthday. But I'm sure you aren't that perverse."

"November 20th," Cindy answered. "Since I'm not nearly so perverse as to deny myself chocolaty goodness on my birthday."

She smiled as she watched Henry. He was fun to watch, okay. "So, since your aide is right out the door, should I refrain from doing a rendition of Marilyn's lesser-known, 'Happy Birthday Mister Librarian' before you start cutting?"

Henry almost choked on his laughter. He was grinning and red-faced as he turned back toward her with the utensils.

"Delightful as that would be," he said, diplomatically, "I don't want to shock Sam. Even if I did hear him bandying about the word 'porn' earlier."

"He's an eighteen year old boy," Cindy laughed. "I'm somehow not surprised. Though since I have my own office, when my birthday rolls around, I won't let you off so easily."

"He's a really good kid," Henry said, mock-offended on Sam's behalf. "And you are giving me a reason to look forward to November. Will you make me sing?"

"Absolutely," Cindy said, nodding earnestly. "Sing for me or no cake for you. Them's the rules."
