Library [06/16]

Sam got to the library a little early today, even after stopping at the Perk for coffee and breakfast. He got set up for the day quickly, the routine having become second nature after so long, and then settled in at the computer to check his e-mail and spend some time playing the Sims.

Yes, it still entertained him years later. Sometimes, he was easy to please.

Henry paused by the front desk with a tray of frosted chocolate cupcakes. (Baking sometimes happened when Henry had spare time, and he'd had spare time the night before. Besides ... cake.)

"It's my birthday," he informed Sam. "There should be cake in the library."

That was some pretty infallible logic there, as far as Sam was concerned. Especially since he seemed willing to share. "Happy birthday," he said. "Are you doing anything to celebrate? Besides, you know, cupcakes."

"Cupcakes aren't enough?" Henry joshed. "Nah, I'm going home for the weekend. I'll see a baseball game if my friend Gomez is up for it."

"That sounds good. Nice and simple," Sam said. "My brother's the party-throwing type, so I can never get away with something quiet for my birthday."

"I'm old. Simple's good," Henry declared, trying to remember if he'd heard anything about Sam's birthday. "What does he normally drag you into?"

"Usually a surprise party at Caritas, where we do things I probably shouldn't admit to doing under the age of 21," Sam said with a smirk. "I feel obligated to tell you that you're not really that old."

Henry laughed. "I'm turning 40. Don't spare my feelings -- I remember being 18. I thought 40 was ancient."

"Nah, you're younger than my dad, so you're definitely not ancient," Sam said, laughing.

"Younger than your dad," Henry reported. "I'll take that. Hey -- unrelated -- when are you heading off the island?"

"End of the session. Two and a half weeks," Sam said, still caught between excitement and terror when he talked about it. "It's going to be really weird not being here."

"It'll be weird being in the library without you," Henry said. "This is going to be the first time I've hired since I got here."

He smiled slightly, a smile of general goodwill. "We'll miss you."

"I'm going to miss everyone here too. I'm trying to be excited about college, and I am, really, but I kind of just want to stay here too." He laughed softly. "I know, it's childish."

"Wanting more than one thing at once?" Henry said. "I don't figure it's childish. I figure it's the human condition."
